I have always had a soft spot for bands that are made up of people from
other bands. I don't know why but it seems like the music is always so fresh
and well made. Think about it, over the years there have been a million
bands that have broken up/taken breaks and splintered off into other
projects. At The Drive-In became Sparta and the Mars Volta, those kids from
Broken Social Scene are everywhere, Rilo Kiley spawned the Elected, and
Cursive initiated Mayday, Criteria, and the Good Life. Of course there are
many more then this but the point is that I think it is always interesting
to see what people come up with in their spare time, whether it be during a
break between albums or bands. Citizens Here and Abroad fit into this
category as they are made up of people from a defunct band, Secardora, and
one revered San Francisco indie band, Dealership. You know what all of that
adds up too right? A fresh sound that is well made. Enjoy.
:Citizens Here And Abroad - Accelerator: For
those of you that drop by frequently you should know by now that I love to
post up songs that do their best to imbed themselves in your head for as
long as possible, this song is no different. There is a lot to love in here;
nicely done boy/girl harmonies, pop inspired music that still carries some
weight, and lyrics that feature some dramatic peaks and valleys. I think you
would be hard pressed to find a better way to kick off the month of
September.
:Citizens Here And Abroad - Secrets: I hate to
throw around the term "progressive" because it has so many different
meanings but I think that is the correct word that should be used to
describe this song. Adrienne Robillard and Daniel Lowrie's vocals are
amazing in this track and the work from Chris Groves (guitar) and Chris
Wetherell (drums) is equally enthralling. If Accelerator got stuck in your
head then be forewarned as this will probably melt your brain.
These songs are from Waving, Not Drowning which is the name of band's second
disc and first for Turn Records, expect to see it everywhere. Also, check
out the band's Myspace for another song!
