I think
Twentyseven Records is on the verge of
being one the best labels around. I raved about the label and their
act, Ivy League, last week and just when I thought it couldn't get any
better Pelle Carlsberg's brand new album showed up in my mailbox this past
weekend. The album is called Everything Now! and if the name of
the artist rings a bell then it is because he is the former front man of
Swedish pop act Edson. Pelle's solo sound is still very much indie pop
but unlike some of the music in that genre it does a wonderful job at
holding your attention with a perfect combination of smart song writing and
a slickly produced sound. If you come here at least once a week then
you have probably figured out by now that I am a sucker for anything that
makes me lose track of large amounts of time because of how captivating it
is, see below for some reasons as to why Pelle has that effect on me.

Carlberg - Go To Hell, Miss Rydell:
My favorite thing about this song is that the first time I heard it I just
kept staring into space as if I couldn't really believe what I was hearing.
It wasn't necessarily the sound or the vocals that were boggling my mind but
the lyrics that were clearly about being upset with a music critic. A
lot of artists have written songs about critics but I am not sure that any
have managed to sound completely sweet and sort of creepy at the same time.
Pelle shows off some insanely smart song writing in this song and I have
been listening to it on repeat because of how witty and charming it is.
It is not just him though as the music used to compliment his voice and
stellar lyrics is brilliantly used and it really adds a lot of depth to an
already captivating song. This is definitely one of my favorite songs
this year.
:Pelle Carlberg - Oh No, It's Happening Again:
"I don't want to be the President, I just want to have a say." I
mentioned a few times how smart these songs are and this one is no
different. I love how calm this feels and with Pelle softly delivering
his lines it makes me zone in even more on every bit of sound that leaves my
speakers. Every line in this makes me grin at how fantastic it is and
I have begun to wonder if he is this great of a song writer because he is 37
and has four kids. If so then I hope I am that clever when I get older
and have kids. Definitely take a moment to study this as I have.
It seems like every week or so something pops up that I feel the need to
declare one of my favorite indie pop albums of the year. Whether or
not those albums stick with me until the end of the year is anybody's guess
but I am certain that Pelle Carlberg won't be leaving my head anytime soon.
Everything Now! drops today and I highly
recommend picking it up as soon as you become Pelle's friend on
Myspace.
