I love Asthmatic Kitty.
Since this blog started in August I have posted about a few of their
artists and at the rate they are going you may see their stuff here pretty
frequently for the rest of time. The roster for that label is just so
unique and interesting that I can't help but to completely fall in love with
anything that they release. So with that it is no wonder that I became
overly excited when I received an email late last week with a couple of
songs from The Curtains new album Calamity, which is the fourth full
length from Chris Cohen (Deerhoof) under that moniker. I love how
without a band or label (at the time) Chris persevered and pretty much recorded, produced,
and performed the entire album all on his own. Apparently he loves to
give no doubt that he is an overachieving badass, prep yourself for some
really nice pop music.
:The
Curtains - Go Lucky:
This song is one of the most stellar bubble gum pop numbers in recent
memory. I love Chris' voice and the sound that he has created, which
is one part Belle & Sebastian and one part Beatles, is magnificent. My
favorite thing about Go Lucky though is how quiet and relaxing it
feels despite the fact that it seems like it could suddenly jump into a loud
and chaotic jumble of noise at any moment, especially towards the end.
I think that is why I feel it is one of the best pop songs in recent memory,
it keeps you on your toes. Download this now.
:The Curtains - Calamity:
Chris seems to have a real knack for writing catchy songs and that
combined with the fact that his voice is so pleasurable to the ears he is
more then equipped to captivate. I thought the music in this was kind
of strange at first but now I am not sure that it would work without it,
there is just something about the eclectic sound that it possesses and how
it works with Chris' voice. Calamity isn't as laid back and
relaxing as Go Lucky but it is still a really great indie pop song
that does its best to stick itself in your head for days, fortunately you
won't mind.
The Curtains' Calamity drops tomorrow on
Asthmatic Kitty
and if you have a moment jump
here to become friends with the band
forever.
