Has this week been really weird
of is it just me?
Scarlett Johansen announced a Tom Waits
cover album, the Houston Police decided that the
Two Gallants were criminals,
5RC was shut down, and then
Jeff Tweedy and
Juan Maclean both got into fights with fans
at separate shows. Out of all of those events I am completely shocked
at what happened to the Two Gallants in Houston. Walter's is an
awesome venue and why anyone would call in a noise complaint because of a
concert going on at a club is beyond me, I mean, is it even possible to turn
down a show? When I haven't been staring at my computer screen with a
scrunched up look on my face I have been gathering up the buzz bands for
this week's EP. Here is hoping for a brawl-less weekend, enjoy!
Friday EP Vol. 7
:White Flight - Solarsphere:
If you like The Anniversary then you are going to love this and it is not
because White Flight sounds anything like them but because it is made up of
Justin Roelofs, who is a former member. He apparently has gone all
psych-folk with this project and I have to admit that is pretty great.
I really like the various parts of it that remind me of Cloud Cult and early
Modest Mouse. This is good stuff, give it a shot.
:Beat Radio - Elegy:
At first I thought maybe so many people were talking about this band
because they made their entire album available for free download. Then
I gave it a listen and realized that the free album download was not the
only reason, this is some finely crafted indie rock. I found myself
instantly hooked by this song and I think you will too.
:Viva Voce - We Do Not Fuck Around:
I had never head of this husband and wife duo from Portland but
apparently they have just rolled out their fourth full length via Barsuk.
Why no one ever bothered to tell me about them is shame because if the rest
of their catalog is a badass as this song then I have been missing out.
I love how Pink Floyd-esque this song feels, take a moment and see for
yourself.
:Swan Lake - All Fires:
A lot of people have had mixed feelings about the new project from Dan
Bejar (New Pornographers, Destroyer), Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade), and Casey
Mercer (Frog Eyes). I haven't heard the entire album but I think those
opinions may have been coming from too high of expectations. All
Fires is a fantastic song and a couple of the other songs that I have
heard were a pleasure to listen too as well. Check this out and form
your own opinion as how good it is or how good it should have been.
:The Sunshine Underground - Put You In Your Place:
The moment this song starts it
is clear to see why people are buzzing about them. There is a lot of
dance-rock around these days but with only hearing two songs I am ready to
declare The Sunshine Underground as one of the better bands in the genre.
This song is breath of fresh air and I absolutely love how much energy is
packed into it, download it now!
