I know the EP has been mostly
about buzz bands the last couple of weeks but for whatever reason I ran
across a lot of cover songs that I really liked this week so I decided I
wanted to share them with you guys. As I have mentioned before the
best thing about cover songs is how everyone has a very distinct opinion on
if they like a particular cover or not. Some people love to hear
different artist's take on the material and then others despise the thought
of another artist covering their favorite song(s). As for me I always
just listen for something neat, what do you guys listen for in a cover song?
Friday EP Vol. 5
:Decemberists - Bridges And Balloons (Joanna Newsom
Cover):
This is one of my favorite songs from Joanna Newsom's The Milk-Eyed
Mender but Colin McCoy and Co. do a great job of bringing an upbeat
acoustic edge to it. It's not as great as the original (I just love
how sweet and beautiful Joanna sounds in it) but it is an interesting take
on the more slower paced, harp driven version.
:Death Cab For Cutie - Here Comes The Rain Again (Eurythmics
Cover):
The fact that Death Cab covered this and The Postal Service didn't feels
all wrong to me but despite that the song works really well. I suppose
in the end all that matters is Ben Gibbard's voice and like always it is the
highlight here as he does a nice job of adding a little something different
to the song.
:Damien Rice - Creep (Radiohead Cover):
I ran across this on
My Old Kentucky Blog and instantly fell in
love with it. It is a completely different take on the original and
Rice pulls it off almost as if he wrote the song himself. I am not
sure Creep has ever felt so intimate.
:Yeah Yeah Yeahs - The Love I'm Searching For (The
Rentals Cover):
I find it pretty amazing how Karen O can sound so sweet sometimes and then
immediately afterwards scream out something like Tell Me What Rockers To
Swallow. This is another nice cover from the band and actually I
think I like it more then their Sonic Youth cover.
On a side note I'm seeing the YYYs on Sunday in Houston, anyone else going?
:Eric Metronome - Lines In The Suit (Spoon Cover):
I think it would be impossible
to make this little EP without an Eric Metronome song. I'm sure that
many of you have heard about his
52 Cover Songs in 52 Weeks project and if
you haven't then you should check it out as he done a lot of neat things.
Eric has a really knack for taking these songs and making them his own, this
is highly recommended.
