I'm pretty sure that Brian Aubert was drunk throughout the band's set but he
was spot on with the highlights of the night being Future For Scenarios
and Lazy Eye, both of which are from this year's Carnavas.
The band was energetic and all smiles throughout all six of their songs and
when they weren't performing Brian was trading quips with the crowd.
Speaking of the crowd I was pleasantly surprised at how many people were
shouting out requests, I kind of figured most wouldn't even pay attention
since I heard quite a few people saying that some "Silver-something" band
was opening the show.
Holy Crap these guys know how to jam! They played about 40 minutes and
every second of it made me want to grab a beer and a cigarette, too bad I
don't smoke or drink beer. I am not too familiar with Dead Meadow's
catalog so I can't point out specific songs but I can say that they all of
them were incredible. I really thought it was amazing how well the
band's 70s acid rock sound grooved the crowd into an anxious frenzy for a
band that they were already excited to see. Dead Meadow know how to
bring it and I will be looking to catch them again as soon as possible.
Due to the rocking ability of the first two bands the crowd was pretty
psyched by the time Wolfmother took the stage but I am confident in saying
that even if the first too bands had been awful the power trio would have
quickly won the crowd over. As shown by the picture of the set list
they pretty much played every song in their catalog, plus one Led Zeppelin
cover, and outside of a slight bit of draginess between Love Train
and the tricked out extended version of Woman the entire performance
was a blast. Woman wasn't the only song that was extended
though as most of the set, except for the part that dragged, had something
added too it that all allowed the band to show off how badass they are.
Vocalist Andrew Stockdale commanded the most attention as he moved around
the stage showcasing magical fingers and a voice that was still able to
shine despite a room full of people singing-a-long at the top of their
lungs. I generally hate encores because I think it is incredibly
retarded to run into a room for two minutes and then return to the stage to
play one song; luckily Wolfmother knows better than to do that sort of thing
and they came back with four songs that were the most energetic and loudest
songs in the set. Way back at SXSW I saw the guys do three songs at
Waterloo Records and since then I have been wanting to see a full set, they
didn't even come close to disappointing.
