Hey Everybody! This is
the end of the list, I hope that you have enjoyed my ramblings about my
favorite albums of 2006. I feel the need to note that the albums in
the list are my favorites, so if you look through the list and think
that I am insane for some of my choices then take a second to realize that
they are discs that affected me in some way. This has been a
good year and since I started this site in August I have gone from one
reader (me) to about 1000 a week. I want to send a big thanks out to
all of you who drop by to read my posts everyday, I love you all. I'm
off to take a break, I will return on January 2, 2007.
Happy Holidays!
#05) Annuals - Be He Me
This album immediately kicks you in the face as soon as it starts, then it
never lets up and despite only being at #5 it was easily the most accessible
album that I heard all year. If you haven't heard this yet then I
would highly recommend it, especially if you have ever wondered what The
Arcade Fire would sound like if they fell in to a blender with a crafty 19
year old.
:Annuals - Carry Around:
#04) Joanna Newsom - Ys
I have to admit that I was completely perplexed as to what Joanna was going
to deliver as a follow-up to The Milk-Eyed Mender. I know for
sure that I wasn't expecting five beautiful masterpieces that clock in at
almost an hour. Joanna is an incredible woman and I think that she
just might be one of, if not the, most prolific songwriters around.
:Joanna Newsom - Emily:
#03) The Magic Numbers - Those The Brokes
Even though I have been totally in love with this band all year I had
absolutely no faith that they could possibly match the quality of their
debut. Then I heard Take A Chance and felt confident that they
could achieve what I had deemed impossible. Now after listening to the
album about 698 times I think that they actually one-upped themselves, I
can't wait for them to tour the US.
:The Magic Numbers - This Is A Song:
#02) The Black Angels - Passover
I love this album! The pounding drums and the reverb heavy
vocals are so insanely good that every time I hear it I want to just turn it
up as loud as possible so that it makes my bones vibrate. Out of
everything on the list this is the one that I demand that you like.
I'm also going to need you to pray to the Concert Gods for a Black Angels
and Dead Meadow tour. Thanks in advance.
:The Black Angels - Young Men Dead:
#01) P.O.S. - Audition
Before I tell all of you what I loved about this album I want you to know
that I didn't choose this as my favorite disc of the year to be different.
I chose it because for the first time, since I began obsessing over music, I
found an artist that made an entire album that I could relate too.
During one of the songs on Audition Stef comments that he "always
seems a step behind." Well I think he is actually a step ahead of
everyone else. There is an overabundance of artists that are cashing
in on the current trend of making entire albums that bash Dubya and his
cronies, Stef on the other hand makes his dislike of the current political
environment known and then moves on to more pressing matters.
Actually, that is the way the entire albums works; it moves from subject to
subject without dwelling and becoming tedious. I suppose that is how
works for a smart man with a lot to say.
On a side note, Stef raves about Charles Bronson while everyone else is too
busy calling Chuck Norris the biggest badass of all time. After a
summer of watching Walker, Texas Ranger I am going to have to side with Stef
on this one.
