An email informing me about a label by the name of Silverthree Sound Recordings popped up in my inbox this weekend with some impressive material from its roster.  The label, which is based out of DC, is home to a variety of artists such as Retisonic, Standstill and Cardia but today I am going to focus on the two that currently have new albums, Two If By Sea and Soft Complex.  A fresh roster of bands is not the only thing that SSR has going for them though as the main brains of the operation are none other than Mike Harbin (Burning Airplanes, Jawbox) and three of his closest friends: Eric, Cyn and Jody.  Sure, an accomplished musician and some of his friends running a label may not be groundbreaking but SSR is here to show that doing both what you love and what works is often better than being the first to find out that the moon is not made out of cheese, if you know what I mean.  Enjoy the music.

:Soft Complex - Barcelona:  I'm surprised that I haven't really heard any buzz about this band before this weekend, especially since the band is made up of former members of Engine Down, Burning Airlines, Phaser and Trixie Delicious and they have Ratatat, Electric 6, The Sounds, Junior Senior and Bishop Allen on the list of bands that they have opened for.  In any case this five piece from DC just released their debut EP, Barcelona, in November and the title track is what's available for download today.  The song, which is very new wave, is insanely catchy and has been stuck in my head for awhile, now it can be stuck in yours.

:Two If By Sea - Report From Damage Control:  Remember that movie about a decade or so ago titled Two If By Sea? Well if you do then you probably remember that it was awful and while I can't say for sure if this band did or did not name themselves after it I will say that they are as far away from awful as they could possible be.  The Baltimore quartet just dropped their latest full length, Safety, in October and after listening to the entire thing I am loving their dark wave Editors-esque sound.  Report From Damage Control is one of the better songs from the album and it is probably going to inspire you bounce around your apartment, enjoy.

Barcelona and Safety can be purchased here and Soft Complex is on Myspace here while Two If By Sea is here.

Also, I just got AIM and my screen name is TheJohnLaird, IM me sometime if you would like to chat.
