Music!  Enjoy.

:Tacocat – I Hate the Weekend:  I can’t fully get behind Tacocat in regards to hating weekends, but I can give this infectious song a big thumbs up.  Lost Time is due out April 1 via Hardly Art.

:Yuck – Hearts In Motion:  Good on Yuck for not letting Daniel Blumberg’s departure in 2013 slow them down at all.  As for this track, I’m not sure vocalist Max Bloom has ever sounded better.  Stranger Things is due out February 26 via Mame Records.

:Woods – Sun City Creeps:  I’m really into this slinky new single from Woods.  On another note, I can’t believe the band is about to put out their ninth full length (their first came out in 2006).  So prolific!  City Sun Eater In The River Of Light is due out April 8 via Woodsist.

:Shearwater – Only Child:  This is a really pretty number from Shearwater.  I’m starting to feel like their upcoming album may end up being one of their best.  Jet Plane And Oxbow is due out January 22 via Sub Pop.  See the band at the North Door on February 3.

:Cross Record – Basket:  Over the break I totally went from liking to loving Austin’s own Cross Record.  You should make sure to put on headphones before you hit play on this atmospheric song.  Wabi Sabi is due out January 29 via Ba Da Bing Records.  See the band at the Mohawk on February 6.

Quickdraw: Maps, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Destruction Unit, Mazes, Woods

Music!  Enjoy.

:Maps – To The Sky (M83 Remix):  I spent a lot of time with this remix over the weekend.  I just really dig the way M83 warped it into something that’s incredibly atmospheric.  On August 19 Mute will release Maps Realigned, which consists of remixes from Maps’ first three full lengths.

:Cymbals Eat Guitars – Chambers:  The single that Cymbals Eat Guitars recently put out is a fantastic track, but this second one is just something else entirely – a total leap forward for them.  Hard to not think the band will really blow up once they release Lose on August 26 via Barsuk.  See them at Red 7 on October 8.

:Destruction Unit – Dust:  Here’s a super solid rock number that Destruction Unit did for Adult Swim’s 2014 Singles Program, which has been rumbling along now for about a month.  If you haven’t already, you should go check out what’s been released so far.

:Mazes – Astigmatism:  It hasn’t even been a full year since Mazes put out a full length, but here they already with a follow-up.  This first track off of it is upbeat, fun and loose.  I like it a lot.  Look for Wooden Aquarium on September 9 via FatCat Records.

:Woods – Tomorrow’s Only Yesterday:  Earlier this year Woods put out a solid album, With Light And With Love, and now they’re following it up with the Tambourine Light 7″ on July 8 via Captured Tracks.  This catchy piece of psychedelia is the b-side on that release.  See Woods at Holy Mountain on August 20.

Quickdraw: OBN IIIs, Swans, Haunted Hearts, Lafawndah, Woods

March 31, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:OBN IIIs – No Time For The Blues:  Austin’s OBN IIIs are such a wonderfully raucous bunch.  Expect this new single to get you up and moving.  Unless, of course, you just hate having fun and whatnot.  Look for Third Time To Harm on May 27 via Tic Tac Totally.

:Swans – A Little God In My Hands:  This is such an epically bizarre and awesome track.  If you ask me, the only way to tackle it is to crank the volume and just let Swans take over for a bit.  A stiff drink or two is also highly recommended.  Young God will release To Be Kind to the masses on May 13.

:Haunted Hearts – Johnny Jupiter:  Dee Dee (of the Dum Dum Girls) and Brandon Welchez (of the Crocodiles) are the main brains behind Haunted Hearts.  I think the two sound pretty stellar together.  You’ll be able to get Initiation on May 27 via Zoo Music.

:Lafawndah – Butter:  My opinion of the name Lafawndah is still way up in the air, but I do really dig this song.  It’s got a bouncy variety of electronic sounds, and I find the vocals to be infectious.  A self titled EP is due out on May 6.

:Woods – With Light And With Love:  Here’s the nine minute title track from Woods’ upcoming album.  The song is thoroughly psychedelic, but it’s still rather accessible and I expect that you’ll find it impressive.  With Light And With Love is due out April 15 via Woodsist.

Quickdraw: Thee Oh Sees, Woods, Mirah, Pure X, Damaged Bug

Music!  Enjoy.

:Thee Oh Sees – Penetrating Eye:  Only Thee Oh Sees can announce a hiatus but then still put together a new album.  Those dudes just don’t know how to stop working.  Not that I mind, of course.  The band will release Drop on April 19 via Castle Face.

:Woods – Moving To The Left:  This has quickly become my favorite Woods’ track.  It’s total psych pop brilliance, and I really hope the new album has more of the same.  With Light And With Love is due out April 15 via Woodsist.  See the band at this year’s Austin Psych Fest.

:Mirah – Oxen Hope:  If you’re into break-up records, then Mirah’s new one is going to be just for you.  She apparently spent the last four years working on it.  Grab Changing Light when it gets released on May 13 through Absolute Magnitude Recordings.

:Pure X – Starlight:  Considering they’re based in Austin, I don’t know really know a lot about Pure X.  I should change that.  Anyhow, this single is beautifully crafted.  The band will put out Angel on April 1 through Fat Possum.  See them at the Austin Psych Fest in May.

:Damaged Bug – Photograph:  Just in case you don’t know, Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer is the man behind Damaged Bug.  I get the feeling that his upcoming LP is going to be a weird (but good) one.  Hubba Bubba is due out February 25 via Castle Face.
