Quickdraw: White Lung, Nothing, Summer Cannibals, Parquet Courts, Wire

February 29, 2016

Music!  Enjoy.

:White Lung – Hungry:  This new White Lung single weirded me out at first.  They’re usually so fierce, and this doesn’t even kind of make me feel like they want to burn down my house.  A cleaned up sound does fit them well though.  Paradise is due out May 6 via Domino.

:Nothing – Vertigo Flowers:  There’s a big wall of guitars on display here, and I’m all about it.  Nothing’s sophomore LP will definitely be a year-end favorite of mind if it has more of the same.  Tired Of Tomorrow is due out May 13 via Relapse.

:Summer Cannibals – Go Home:  Summer Cannibals’ front woman Jessica Boudreaux is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.  She’s just got a great voice (it’s kind of like a more punk rock version of Alicia Bognanno from Bully).  Full Of It is due out May 27 via Kill Rock Stars.

:Parquet Courts – Berlin Got Blurry:  “Nothing lasts but nearly everything lingers in life.”  What a line.  On another note, this is easily one of Parquet Courts most accessible tracks.  Human Performance is due out April 8 via Rough Trade.  The band will play Levitation in April/May.

:Wire – Nocturnal Koreans:  You have to give it up to Wire for the way they’re still trucking along and churning out quality tunes.  They started in 1976!  Nocturnal Koreans is due out April 29 via Pinkflag.

Quickdraw: Black Milk, Wire, Blur, Zero 7, James Murphy

March 23, 2015

Music!  Enjoy.

:Black Milk – I Guess:  Black Milk recently released this infectious track in an effort to make sure you know that he’s now out on tour  So, do him a solid and give it good listen, then see if he’s coming to a town near you.

:Wire – Split Your Ends:  Here’s the latest rather sharp single to be released off of Wire’s upcoming album.  Maybe it’s time for all of us to get legit excited about the LP.  The band’s self titled effort is due out April 21 via Pinkflag.

:Blur – There Are Too Many Of Us:  I initially found this new one from Blur to be a little lacking, but it’s grown on me.  The arrangement is fantastic, and Damon Albarn’s vocals are oddly entrancing.  The Magic Whip is due out April 27.

:Zero 7 – 400 Blows:  This Zero 7 track has been lodged in my head for the last few days.  It’s really well crafted and deserving of any dedicated headphone-time you’re willing to spend with it.  Look for EP 3 April 13 via Make Records.

:James Murphy – We Used To Dance:  If SXSW turned you into a mumbling burnout, then this spacious instrumental track should help bring you back.  On another note, I love it when James Murphy dials things back.  The While We’re Young soundtrack is due out March 24 via Milan Records.

Quickdraw: Speedy Ortiz, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Wire, Joanna Gruesome, The Go! Team

February 12, 2015

Music!  Enjoy.

:Speedy Ortiz – Raising The Skate:  “I’m not bossy/I’m the boss.”  I’m forever in love with Speedy Ortiz, and it’s not just because of their on-point 90s-rock sound, it’s also the songwriting.  Sadie Dupuis is brilliant.  Foil Deer is due out April 21 via Carpark Records.  See the band at Red 7 on May 15.

:Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Multi-Love:  I’ve yet to decide exactly where I stand when it comes to Unknown Mortal Orchestra.  I like a few songs a lot (like this one), but have yet to love any of their albums.  They are great live, though.  Guess I’ll see how I react when Multi-Love gets released on May 26 via Jagjaguwar.

:Wire – Joust And Jostle:  Wire just keep rolling on.  The veteran act have readied their 13th full length, and this is the first single off of it.  I think it’s a melodic gem.  The band will release a self titled album on April 21 via Pinkflag.

:Joanna Gruesome – Last Year:  I know that Joanna Gruesome comes loaded with various novelties (a silly name, a schizo sound that’s both wildly fierce and sugary sweet), but I love them anyways.  It’s fun to listen to people who are having fun, you know?  Peanut Butter is due out June 2 via Slumberland.

:The Go! Team – Blowtorch:  The title track off of The Go! Team’s upcoming LP has been out for a while now, but apparently this jangly pop tune is actually the lead single.  What?  Anyhow, I dig it and remain excited about their new album.  The Scene Between is due out March 24 via Memphis Industries.
