Quickdraw: Meatbodies, Wampire, Ariel Pink, Deerhoof, Mr. Gnome

September 11, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Meatbodies – Disorder:  Just in case you don’t know, Meatbodies is lead by Chad Ubovich, who also plays in Mikal Cronin’s band and FUZZ.  I think the act’s upcoming album is going to a raucous good time. The self titled effort is due out October 14 via In The Red.

:Wampire – The Amazing Heart Attack:  The first single off of Wampire’s new full length hinted that it might be time to take them seriously, and now there’s this second track to really drive that point home.  I say we all grab a spot on the bandwagon while there’s still room.  Look for Bazaar on October 7 via Polyvinyl.

:Ariel Pink – Put Your Number In My Phone:  Ariel Pink in album-length form always tends to be a bit much for me, but I sure do love his singles.  This jangly, somewhat hazy tune is definitely another gem on the pile.  Pom Pom is expected out on November 18 via 4AD.

:Deerhoof – Paradise Girls:  Here’s a pleasantly weird (and of course, really catchy) new track from Deerhoof.  I assume the world will just instantly end if the veteran act ever actually manage to run out of ideas.  The band will release La Isla Bonita on November 4 via Polyvinyl.

:Mr. Gnome – Rise And Shine:  Mr. Gnome haven’t put out an album since 2011, and you can totally tell when you listen to this song.  Not that it sounds rusty or anything like that, there’s just a ton of enthusiasm in it that clearly says the band is happy to be back.  The Heart Of A Dark Star is due out November 18 via El Marko Records.

Quickdraw: Terry Malts, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Wampire, Music Go Music, Sophie

Music!  Enjoy.

:Terry Malts – Let You In:  I love me some Terry Malts, so you know I was excited when they announced that they had readied a new EP.  This pop tune isn’t too different than the band’s usual approach – catchy and with just the right amount of fuzz – and I’m totally fine with that.  Slumberland will release the Insides EP on September 23.

:Cymbals Eat Guitars – Warning:  Here’s the third stellar single to be put out in anticipation of Cymbals Eat Guitars upcoming album.  You’re crazy if you’re not overly excited to hear what else is on the new LP.  Lose is due out August 26 via Barsuk.  See the band at Red 7 on October 8.

:Wampire – Wizard Staff:  If you’ve long been unsure about whether or not you should take Wampire seriously, this slinky song should convince you to do so.  You’ll just have to overlook the fact that it’s called Wizard Staff.  Look for Bazaar on October 7 via Polyvinyl.

:Music Go Music – Inferno:  There’s definitely a bit of cheesiness that comes with Music Go Music (“My world is burning/My soul is yearning to be with you”), but their groovy sound makes it all work.  The band will release Impressions on August 19 via Thousand Tongues.

:Sophie – Lemonade:  I’ve been jamming this schizo pop tune for a week now and I’m still totally baffled by it.  I think I like it.  Or maybe I love it?  I really don’t know.  Perhaps I’ll figure it out when I’m older.  Sophie’s Lemonade/Hard single is available now via Numbers.

Quickdraw: Wampire, Vampire Weekend, Majical Cloudz, Virgin Of The Birds, Eluvium

May 6, 2013

Today’s music was raised by wolves.  Enjoy.

:Wampire – Trains:  I really dig this song.  It’s a breezy, charming pop effort that I imagine will turn the majority of you into Wampire fans.  Here’s hoping their upcoming LP has more of the same.  Curiosity is due out May 14 via Polyvinyl.

:Vampire Weekend – Ya Hey:  I’ll give it up to Vampire Weekend, they’re upcoming album is looking like it will be one of the year’s best pop releases.  Every song released so far has been pretty great.  Modern Vampires Of The City is due out May 14 via XL.

:Majical Cloudz – Bugs Don’t Buzz:  I recently saw Majical Cloudz perform, and it made me realize they shouldn’t be experienced with a crowd.  Their work is intimate stuff, so if you’re going to spend some time with it (and you should), use headphones.  The highly anticipated Impersonator is due out May 21 via Matador.

:Virgin Of The Birds – Make Me A Witch:  Here’s one from an act that’s long been a SOTO favorite.  Main-brain Jon Rooney really knows how to do lo-fi pop, so don’t be surprised when this track quickly wins you over.  The Summer Palace EP is available now on Bandcamp.

:Eluvium – Happiness (Featuring Ira Kaplan Of Yo La Tengo):  This is a beautiful song, but I’ll admit it’s a terrible choice for a post on a Monday.  No one wants to start their week with an intricate eight-minute wad of emotion.  Still, it’s too good to not share.  Nightmare Ending is due out May 14 via Temporary Residence LTD.
