Top 50 Songs Of 2016: Part 3

November 30, 2016

I was going to stop at #31, but I figured that was silly.  So, the list continues on!  Enjoy.

Part 1 is HERE.
Part 2 is HERE.

PS – I got a ton of take down notices, so you’ll have to listen via Spotify.

30)  :Mystery Lights – Follow Me Home:  Daptone launched a rock imprint – WICK – in 2016, and this Mystery Lights single was its first release.  I dig how loud and sloppy it is.

29)  :Weaves – Coo Coo:  If you like things that are clever and quirky, then this song from Weaves will delight you.

28)  :Twin Peaks – Walk To The One You Love:  This might be my favorite Twin Peaks track.  It’s such a breezy slice of garage pop.

27)  :Frankie Cosmos – On The Lips:  I’m all about Greta Kline (aka Frankie Cosmos) and her rather sincere voice here.  Also, I appreciate that this song mentions David Blaine.

26)  :The Tallest Man On Earth – Time Of The Blue:  Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man On Earth) cut this late one night while out on the road.  I think it’s one of his better songs.

25)  :Field Mouse – The Mirror:  Mostly 90s, sort of emo, entirely great.  That’s probably the best way to describe this one from Field Mouse.

24)  :The Hotelier – Piano Player:  The Hotelier offer up a lot of song here (roughly six swirling minutes worth), but thankfully it’s a great ride that’s totally worth the time and attention it requires.

23)  :Tancred – Control Me:  Here’s one of my favorite 90s-inspired tracks of 2016.  It’s just about perfect.  Good work, Tancred.

22)  :LIV – Wings of Love:  This is a fantastic Fleetwood Mac-like effort from LIV, a “supergroup” that features Lykke Li, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt and Pontus Winnberg, Peter Bjorn & John’s Björn Yttling and producer Jeff Bhasker.

21)  :Priests – JJ:  Frontwoman Katie Alice Greer destroys in this Priests track.  That voice of hers is just so very rad.

Quickdraw: Mind Spiders, Twin Peaks, White Denim, Tangerine, Yuck

Music!  Enjoy.

:Mind Spiders – Cold:  This new one from Mind Spiders is the best post punk song I’ve heard in who knows how long.  I can’t take it off repeat.  Prosthesis is due out March 11 via Dirtnap.

:Twin Peaks – Walk To The One You Love:  Twin Peaks have assembled a third full length, and this charming garage pop number is the first single off of it.  I like how comfortable it sounds.  Down In Heaven is due out May 13 via Grand Jury.  You’ll be able to see the band at Levitation in April/May.

:White Denim – Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah):  “I need you like bacon needs eggs.”  Even if this song wasn’t a total blast of retro-enthused fun, I’d still be into it because of that one lyric.  White Denim will release Stiff on March 25 via Downtown.  You can see the band this Thursday at C-Boys Heart & Soul.

:Tangerine – Sunset:  Whenever I listen to this song two things pop into my head – “What an infectious effort!” and “Why in the world haven’t I ever paid any attention to Tangerine?”.  The Sugar Teeth EP is due out February 19 via Swoon.

:Yuck – Cannonball:  Here’s a quickie (that’s somehow not a Breeders’ cover) from Yuck.  It’s fuzzy and loud, and I’m really into it.  Stranger Things is due out February 26.

Quickdraw: Obits, Twin Peaks, Whirr, Static Jacks, Joseph Childress

July 8, 2013

Today’s music could use one more day off.  Enjoy.

:Obits – Taste The Diff:  This snarling punk track is exactly what all of our summers needed.  Turn it way up, friends.  Obits will put out a new full length, Bed & Bugs, on September 10 through the almighty Sub Pop.

:Twin Peaks – Irene:  While I think Twin Peaks is an odd name for a pop act (I can’t help but think of the breastaurant), I do like their music.  This is one glimmering effort.  The band will put out Sunken tomorrow on Autumn Tone Records.

:Whirr – Swoon:  There’s a whole lot going on in this massive song from Whirr, and I like all of it.  A lot.  I can’t wait to see them live, as I imagine it’s a thunderous time.   Around is due out on Graceface Records tomorrow.  If you’re in Austin, the band will play the Mohawk on August 3.

:Static Jacks – I’ll Come Back:  Until this pop number came along, I wasn’t at all familiar with the Static Jacks.  Now I just need to get on with seeing if the rest of their stuff is this crazy catchy.  In Blue Out is due October 1 via Old Friends Records.

:Joseph Childress – Whispering Tide:  There was a day over the holiday break where I was just sort of obsessed with this song.  Joseph Childress has a great voice, and I pretty much get lost in it.  The Rebirths is due August 20 via Empty Cellar Records.
