Show Of The Week

January 10, 2018

Due to timing and a post-Free Week absence of shows, my pick this week is actually for a show that’s next week.  Ha.  Anyhow, the great Destroyer is set to play the Mohawk on Monday, January 15, and that just seems like something you should definitely attend.  I can’t be there, so you’ll have to get weird for me while listening to tracks off of Destroyer’s super solid 2017 release, Ken.

Tix are $20 in advance of the show, $22 the day of.  Mega Bog will open.

Quickdraw: Trail Of Dead, Diarrhea Planet, Shivery Shakes, Viet Cong, Nothing

Music!  Enjoy.

:And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – A Million Random Digits:  Just last week I noted that the upcoming Trail Of Dead album could be a really good one, but now there’s this second single and I’m just ready to say that it for sure will be.  I haven’t heard the band sound this great since 2009′s The Century of Self.  Seek out IX when it gets released on November 11 via Superball.

:Diarrhea Planet – Bamboo Curtain:  While I tend to prefer my Diarrhea Planet dialed all the way to 11, their “slower” tunes are far from bad.  Case in point, this 90s-esque pop rock tune that’s voiced by drummer Casey Weissbuch.  The Aliens In The Outfield EP is due out November 18 via Infinity Cat.

:Shivery Shakes – Recurring Dreams:  Austin’s own Shivery Shakes will soon release their debut full length, and I’m sure it’s going to be a wonderfully breezy, easily accessible pop effort.  If you haven’t already, make a note about them.  Three Waves & A Shake is due out on October 21 via Austin Town Hall/Punctum.

:Viet Cong – Continental Shelf:  If you’re like me and have been a little slow to fully come around on Viet Cong, then this song is going to completely change that.  It’s a fantastically crafted piece that I can’t seem to take off of repeat.  The band will release their self titled album on January 20 via Jagjaguwar.

:Nothing – July The Fourth:  About midway through my first listen of this shoegazey effort I couldn’t help but notice that Nothing sound like a more raw version of Whirr.  Then I realized that this track is the flip side of a split 7″ with Whirr.  I should probably go outside or something.  The Whirr/Nothing 7′” is due out November 17 via Run For Cover.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

In all honesty, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead are a band that’s always been hit or miss for me.  Some of their albums I love dearly, and then there are others that I can do without.  Judging by their new single, I think the band’s upcoming ninth full length is going to be one of those efforts that I dig.  I love the moodiness of the song, and the production is spot on.  Enjoy.

:And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – The Ghost Within:

IX is due out November 10 via Superball.

Throwback Thursday: And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead

Just about 97% of what we post here at SOTO is directly out of the pile of music that’s as new and fresh as can be.  Now, I love that about the site, but I figured I’d maybe bump that down to 95% with a steady stream of Throwback Thursday posts.  Look for them every week, and let’s do some reminiscing together.

Since And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead are set to take the stage at the Mohawk tonight to play 2002′s Source Tags & Codes in its entirety, that album seemed like the best choice for the first Throwback Thursday post.

I’ll never forget how Source Tags & Codes scored a 10 from Pitchfork. I didn’t even read Pitchfork then, but I still remember that review being something that validated the album.  Only, it didn’t actually need any “official” critical praise, it’s an awesomely fierce effort regardless of what anyone thinks.  But hey, when you’re young and impressionable things like perfect scores from some website are important, I guess.
