Quickdraw: Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Toro Y Moi, Soley, Hollow Sunshine, Two Sheds

Music!  Enjoy.

:Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin – Step Brother City:  While the name Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin has gotten less funny/cute over the years, the band has actually gotten better and better.  This new one is energetic and infectious, and I think it may be their best song yet.  The High Country is due out June 2 via Polyvinyl.

:Toro Y Moi – Run Baby Run:  To be honest, I sort of hated this track the first time I heard it.  Then I found myself humming it a lot, and now here we are.  It’s definitely Chaz Bundick being retro in a way he never really has before (all pop, no funk).  What For? is due out April 7 via Carpark Records.

:Soley – Follow Me Down:  This atmospheric brooder from Iceland’s Soley has done a great job of reminding me that I totally like Iceland’s Soley.  Good to have her back!  Her first album since 2011′s We Sink is titled Ask The Deep, and it’s due out May 12 via Morr Music.

:Hollow Sunshine – Careful Travel:  I love a good slice of shoegaze, and that’s definitely what this is.  On a related note, the name Hollow Sunshine couldn’t possibly scream “shoegaze band” any louder.  Bring Gold will be released this summer via Iron Pier.

:Two Sheds – Get It Out:  I found this Two Sheds track over at Stereogum a few days back.  It has an odd pace to it, but I like the dramatic songwriting and Caitlin Gutenberger’s voice is great.  Assembling is due out May 26 via Crossbill Records.

Quickdraw: Toro Y Moi, Big Bill, The Babies, Turbo Fruits, FIDLAR

January 26, 2015

Music!  Enjoy.

:Toro Y Moi – Empty Nesters:  If anything, you have to applaud Chaz Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) for keeping things fresh.  His last album was fairly disco/funky, and now his new one seems to be aiming for more of a blissed-out (but still danceable) indie pop sound.  What For? will be released on April 7 via Carpark.

:Big Bill – Sweet Boy:  Big Bill are a quirky garage rock act that’s been a real bright spot in Austin for the last year or so.  This track is probably my favorite selection off of their recently released Second Bill EP, which you should snatch up now via Bandcamp.

:The Babies – Got Old:  “I was 21, I was 33.”  I relate to this lyric a whole lot more than I’d like to.  Big thanks to The Babies for crushing me.  I guess.  This is from a two-song single that’s currently available via iTunes.

:Turbo Fruits – The Way I Want You:  The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney produced this new one from Turbo Fruits.  It features lyrics that are a bummer and a sound that’s thoroughly 90s rock, so I like it a lot.  No Control is due out April 20 via Melvin/Thirty Tigers Records.

:FIDLAR – If It Makes You Happy (Sheryl Crow Cover):  Yes, FIDLAR covering Sheryl Crow is just as fun and obnoxious as you’re thinking it must be.  Now crank the volume, hit play and let it take you.  This is just a one-off, so grab it while you can.

Toro Y Moi

September 12, 2013

Toro Y Moi (aka Chaz Bundick) will soon be playing a variety of shows in Austin, so it makes sense that he’s suddenly readied a tour-only 7″.  I mean, it’s not like he can just roll into town without a gift, right?  Anyhow, the single is titled Campo, and those aforementioned gigs include both weekends of ACL and an evening at Emo’s.  Enjoy.

:Toro Y Moi – Campo:  A few months back Rolling Stone had an interview with Chaz where he expressed that he was “tired of doing R&B and funk.”  So, does this track feature a wild change?  Not really – it’s essentially a minimalistic approach to his usual sound.  I like it, though.

Quickdraw: Starfucker, Kirby Kaiser, Toro Y Moi, Eat Skull, Torres

January 7, 2013

We’re back!  Let’s get it going.  Enjoy.

:STRFKR – Say To You:  I probably could have brought the site back online with just this relaxed, headphone-worthy track from STRFKR, and all of you would have been satisfied.  It really is that good.  The now highly anticipated Miracle Mile is due out February 19 via Polyvinyl.

:Kirby Kaiser – Every Time:  Kirby Kaiser is only 20, but she’s already churning out some great stuff.  For instance, this song, which is charming enough to make even the most jaded of you want to find someone to cuddle with.  Female Jungle is expected out at some point over the next few months.

:Toro Y Moi – Say That:  I’m really starting to fully appreciate Chaz Bundick.  The guy is always twisting the sound of Toro Y Moi into different things, and he pulls it off more often than not.  Turn this spacious jam up and let it fill the room.  Anything In Return is due January 22 via Carpark.

:Eat Skull – Space Academy:  Here’s a little something I found over at Pitchfork this weekend.  It’s wonderfully noisy and fuzzed out, and you should expect to want to call it the first great rock track of 2013.  Woodsist will release III on February 19.

:Torres – Honey:  While I really like this song and think that it’s as inspired as can be, I find it a bit hard to casually listen to.  The damn thing is just sad.  Who starts a new year this way?!  Anyhow, Torres is due out January 22.
