“Tobacco has an album of old stuff.”  That’s what the press release for today’s meaty track notes, so that’s what I’m passing to you.  Look for the effort, which is titled Ripe & Majestic (Instrumental Rarities & Unreleased Beats), on August 25.  Enjoy.

Top 50 Songs Of 2016: Part 2

November 29, 2016

Here are more songs I liked in 2016.  Enjoy.

Part 1 of this list is HERE.

PS – I got a ton of take down notices, so you’ll have to listen via Spotify.

40)  :The xx – On Hold:  I know this track from The xx is only a few weeks old, but I’ve been obsessed with it and I just had to include it on my year-list.  It’s intoxicating.

39)  :Charli XCX – Vroom Vroom:  Charli XCX cranked this out in conjunction with Sophie, and it’s just the most goddamn ridiculous thing.  Please be sure to listen to it as loud as possible.

38)  :Tobacco – Gods in Heat:  I’ve had this Tobacco song on repeat for months.  It’s fairly weird and oddly sexy (it is called Gods in Heat, after all), and I just love it.

37)  :Chaos Emeralds – Animal Kingdom:  I’m not sure why this song from Chaos Emeralds isn’t all over the radio.  Talk about accessible and catchy.

36)  :Thao And The Get Down Stay Down – Nobody Dies:  Here’s one from Thao that I revisited a lot this year.  It’s an attention-grabber.

35)  :Bleached – Keep on Keepin’ On:  This song from Bleached really makes me want to get up and move and because of this it’s what I’m going to hit play on if someone ever starts chasing me.

34)  :The Julie Ruin – I Decide:  If you ask me, this is the best track off of The Julie Ruin’s 2016 release, Hit Reset.  On another note, Kathleen Hanna’s voice is still rad.

33)  :Phantogram – Cruel World:  Phantogram went for (and achieved) bigger and better things in 2016, but this track sounds like the old them and it’s what stuck with me.  Go figure.

32)  :The Range – Florida:  The Range really nailed it here.  I advise that you slap on headphones before you hit play.

31)  :Sheer Mag – Can’t Stop Fighting:  I’m starting to feel like it’s no longer possible for me to do a year-end song list that doesn’t include Sheer Mag.  Here’s hoping they keep on killing it.

Today is my birthday!  I’m 109 (in internet years).  Guess that means I’m old?  I don’t really know.  On another note, there’s a new Tobacco track out, and it’s just as rad as the other one that recently got released (you can give it a listen down below, too).  Crank it and – if you want – think good things about me.  Enjoy.

:Tobacco – Human Om:

Sweatbox Dynasty is due out August 19 via Ghostly International.

Sweaty, distorted, indistinguishable, catchy, oddly danceable.  That’s pretty much how I would describe the music made by Tobacco (the fella that fronts Black Moth Super Rainbow, not the product).  Below is his latest single.  I love it.  Enjoy.

:Tobacco – Gods In Heat:

Sweatbox Dynasty is due out August 19 via Ghostly International.

Quickdraw: Parquet Courts, Beverly, Hooray For Earth, Royksopp/Robyn, Tobacco

Music!  Enjoy.

:Parquet Courts – Black And White:  The side of Parquet Courts that’s raw, aggressive, and just all-out is fun and whatnot, but I really love the dialed-back, hooky version of them that’s on display in this track.  Sunbathing Animal is due out June 3 on What’s Your Rupture?/Mom+Pop.

:Beverly – You Can’t Get It Right:  Just in case you don’t know, Beverly is made up of Drew Citron and SOTO favorite Frankie Rose.  I think this song of theirs is a lo-fi pop delight.  Look for Careers on July 1 via Kanine Records.

:Hooray For Earth – Keys:  Here’s a shiny new single from Hooray For Earth that I like a lot.  I can honestly see it being something that radio eventually snatches up, so keep your “I heard that way back” faces ready.  You’ll be able to get Racy on July 29 via Dovecote.

:Royksopp And Robyn – Do It Again:  Yeah, so it’s Monday and you probably don’t want to move, but this song will get you on your feet (or at least make you aggressively nod your head).  Royksopp and Robyn should always work together.  The Do It Again mini-album will be released on May 26 via Cherry Tree/Interscope.

:Tobacco – Father Sister Berzerker:  If Tobacco’s usually bizarro vocals are too much for you, then I think you’ll dig this instrumental number from them.  Be sure to grab some headphones so that it can properly swirl around in your head.  Ghostly will release Ultima II Massage on May 13.

Quickdraw: Wye Oak, Tobacco, Son Lux, Pattern Is Movement, Pure X

March 20, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Wye Oak – Glory:  I’d be a lair if I said I didn’t scoff a bit when I heard about Wye Oak being behind a synth-heavy jam, but here the song is in all of its awesomeness.  I was so wrong to doubt them.  Anyway, their upcoming album is going to be an interesting listen.  Merge will release Shriek on April 29.

:Tobacco – Eruption (Gonna Get My Hair Cut At The End Of The Summer):  If you listen to Black Moth Super Rainbow, then you’re probably familiar with the solo work of their main-brain, Tobacco.  I very much appreciate that the guy couldn’t make a “normal” song if he wanted to.  Look for Ultima II Massage on May 13 via Ghostly.

:Son Lux – Easy (Switch Screens) (Featuring Lorde):  A Lorde-enhanced version of a Son Lux song that came out last year is about as random as it gets, but I absolutely love what came of the pairing.  This new take is one of the slicker things I’ve heard so far in 2014.

:Pattern Is Movement – Climb To Me:  If there’s one thing that must be said about Pattern Is Movement, it’s definitely that they always figure out a new way to spin their already interesting sound.  The band will release a self titled album on April 1 via Hometapes.

:Pure X – Heaven:  Here’s a rather pretty new one from Austin’s Pure X.  It makes me want to kick back on a porch somewhere and then just stare off into the distance.  Angel is all set to be released on April 1 via Fat Possum.
