Quickdraw: Tancred, Broken Social Scene, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Michael Nau, Tops

I was really looking forward to seeing Tancred next month, but all of that crazy stuff with PWR BTTM killed that tour.  Bummer.  At least I got a catchy new song though to hold me over until they can manage to make it back to Austin.

If you had asked me if Broken Social Scene were still a thing, I would have said no with a fair amount of confidence.  Yet here they are.  And they sound fantastic!  Shows what I know.  Anyhow, look out for their new album, Hug Of Thunder, on July 7.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart have a new album, The Echo Of Pleasure, coming on July 14.  This first single is the best thing I’ve heard from them in a long while, and I’m saying that as a fan of their recent efforts.  Great stuff here.

This track from Michael Nau makes me want to grab my lady and slow dance around the living room.  What an infectious and warm effort.  Look for his new album, Some Twist, on June 16.

Sugar At The Gate is the name of Tops’ upcoming album, and it’ll be out on June 2.  You’re broken if their new tune doesn’t make you want to move.

Quickdraw: Diarrhea Planet, Cherry Glazerr, Tennis System, Weed Hounds, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

Music!  Enjoy.

:Diarrhea Planet – Heat Wave:  This is a great song, but I have to admit that I’m currently operating in a place where I’ll post anything that Diarrhea Planet puts out.  The band is just too fun and too on point right now for me to even consider not sharing their stuff.   The Aliens In The Outfield EP is due out November 18 via Infinity Cat Recordings.

:Cherry Glazerr – Had Ten Dollaz:  Cherry Glazerr’s press release says they’re an “astonishingly young” trio (two of them aren’t old enough to vote and the other is just over 21), but they certainly don’t sound like it.  This song is dripping with confidence and is pushing out a fairly calculated vibe.  I like it.  A lot.  The band will release the Had Ten Dollaz/Nurse Ratched single on October 28 via Suicide Squeeze.

:Tennis System – Dead Honey:  Throughout the weekend I found myself wanting to frequently revisit this new one from Tennis System.  I love the driving arrangement and the vocal work is pretty great, too.  Technicolour Blind will be released on October 21 via Papercup Music.  See the band at Cheer Up Charlie’s on October 14.

:Weed Hounds – Harbor:  It took them five years (apparently), but Weed Hounds have finally readied a full length.  If you have a fondness for shoegaze and/or 90s indie rock, then you can expect to dig what the band has crafted.  You can either buy their self titled album in a variety of formats or you can download it right here for FREE.

:The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Summer Of Dreams:  Here’s a pleasant selection from the new extended version of the album that The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart released earlier this year.  The songwriting is a bit cheesier than usual for the band, but I think that overall the track is a good one.  The deluxe edition of Days of Abandon is available now via Yebo.

Quickdraw: Pujol, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Twin Shadow, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Swans

April 17, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Pujol – Circles:  This will sound odd, but I’m actually relieved that the first couple of singles off of Pujol’s upcoming full length have failed to make me think it’s going to be much different than his last effort.  He churns out simple but catchy rock ‘n’ roll tunes, and I sincerely hope he never changes anything.  Saddle Creek will release Kludge on May 19.

:The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Eurydice:  The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart seem to have set aside a little bit of their shimmer in exchange for a more anthemic sound, and I’m really digging it.  I think it fits them well.  Days Of Abandon is due out on May 13 via Yebo Music.

:Twin Shadow – To The Top:  While I sort of feel like this song could be the title track for some schlocky Sylvester Stallone-lead 80s sports movie, I totally love it.  Here’s a question though, has Twin Shadow somehow warped himself into just being a guilty pleasure?  Details on a new album should be available soon.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Crushin:  This relaxing number isn’t as much of an attention-grabber as A Sunny Day In Glasgow’s last single, but I do think it’s just as good.  Their upcoming album is now pretty high on my anticipated list.  Expect Sea When Absent to be released on June 24 via Lefse.

:Swans – Oxygen:  Like everything else that comes from the entity known as Swans, this song isn’t something you just casually play in the background.  If you dare hit play, be sure to strap in and get ready to focus.  Look for To Be Kind on May 13 Young God.

Quickdraw: The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Gay, Paws, Deleted Scenes, Sleepmakewaves

Music!  Enjoy.

:The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Simple And Sure:  And then The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart returned and the world rejoiced in knowing that it would soon have a new set of shimmering pop songs to support them whenever melancholy attacks.  Get Days Of Abandon when it’s released on April 22 via Yebo Music.

:Gay – Blue Blue Heart:  While Gay probably wouldn’t be my top choice if I were given the chance to name these guys, I do really like this track.  It’s catchy and retro in all of the right ways.  The band will put out their 7″ tomorrow via ZOO Records.

:Paws – Tongues:  Here’s a new one from Paws, a pop punk act I’ve been following for a bit now.  It’s a loud one that you can expect to get lodged in your head.  Look out for Youth Culture Forever to be released on May 6 via FatCat Records.  The band will play Red 7 on May 15.

:Deleted Scenes – Songs Of Leaving Behind:  I appreciate that Deleted Scenes are one of those bands that seem to revel in being unpredictable.  It keeps things exciting.  By the way, this semi-slowing burning song is totally headphone-worthy.  Lithium Burn will be released on April 15 via Park The Van/Nevado.

:Sleepmakeswaves – One Day You Will Teach Me To Let Go Of My Fears:  This track from Australia’s Sleepmakeswaves was an instant hit on the instrumental music-loving side of my brain.  Listen up if you like bands like The Timeout Drawer, Explosions In The Sky, Russian Circles, etc.  Monotreme Records will release In Today Already Walks Tomorrow on April 8.
