Show Of The Week

September 16, 2015

I should be totally selfish this week and only tell you to come to the show I’m DJ’ing (it’s Thursday at Cheer Up Charlie’s for The Harms’ vinyl release show) or the next Red Bull Sound Select showcase I helped assemble (it’s Saturday at Sidewinder with The Black Lips), but for the sake of not making everything about me, I want all of you to focus on seeing Titus Andronicus, Spider Bags and Baked at Sidewinder on Sunday.  Titus’ latest album, The Most Lamentable Tragedy, is a gem, and their raucous live show will make it easy to ignore the fact that you have to get up and go to work on Monday.  Plus, Spider Bags are really rad.  See you there!

BY THE WAY, you can enter to win a pair of guest list spots for the show on Sunday simply by sending me an email HERE with TITUS in the subject line.

Quickdraw: Bleached, Spider Bags, White Fence, Honeyblood, Menace Beach

June 23, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Bleached – For The Feel:  Bleached have a three-song 7″ on the way, and this is the title track.  Because it’s just what they do better than most and there’s no reason to change anything, it’s a really catchy surf rock number.  The For The Feel 7″ is due out on September 16 via Dead Oceans.

:Spider Bags – Japanese Vacation:  I’m quickly figuring out that the fellas behind Spider Bags really know how to write a hook.  No wonder Merge recently snatched them up.  The label will release the highly anticipated Frozen Letter on August 5.

:White Fence – Like That:  I’ve long been a fan of White Fence and their lo-fi ways, but I’m sort of excited by the news that Tim Presley (with Ty Segall) opted to step everything up for the new album.  As this song shows, a cleaner sound actually fits the act well.  To The Recently Found Innocent is due out July 22 via Drag City.

:Honeyblood – Super Rat:  Shona McVicar and Stina Tweeddale are the duo behind Honeyblood, and this song features them being really pissed with someone.  “I will hate you forever/You really do disgust me.”  Props to them on the grudge-holding front.  The band will release their self titled album on July 15 via FatCat Records.

:Menace Beach – Tennis Court:  There’s a distinct 90s rock vibe all over this track from Menace Beach, and I’m really digging it.  I’d like to hear more from the band as soon as possible.  Look for the Tennis Court/Lowtalking 7″ on September 1 via Memphis Industries.

Quickdraw: Shabazz Palaces, Garden City Movement, PS I Love You, Austra, Spider Bags

May 12, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Shabazz Palaces – They Come In Gold:   I’ve never exactly been a huge fan of Shabazz Palaces, but that’s not stopping me from championing this killer track.  Maybe their upcoming full length will finally inspire me to fully climb up on their bandwagon.  Lese Majesty is due out July 29 via Sub Pop.

:Garden City Movement – Terracotta:  Garden City Movement are out of Tel Aviv, and they’re just about to release a new EP (it’s the follow-up to last year’s Entertainment EP).  The music reminds me a lot of Purity Ring.  Expect the Bengali Cinema EP to be set free on June 23 via BLDG5.

:PS I Love You – For Those Who Stay:  I can’t say I ever figured PS I Love You had a sprawling six and a half minute song in them, but that’s exactly what this is.  And it’s good!  Their new album is now on my anticipated list.  Look out for the currently untitled effort at some point in July via Paper Bag Records.

:Austra – Habitat:  Here’s one from Austra that was recorded due to fans frequently requesting an official version.  It had only previously existed as part of the band’s live set.  The Habitat EP will be released on June 17 via Domino.

:Spider Bags – Back With You Again In The World:  And the latest band to join the Merge roster is … Spider Bags.  Yeah, I know, it’s a terribly unattractive name, but don’t let that stop you from digging the riffy, Men-like quality of their sound.  Frozen Letter is due out on August 5.
