Quickdraw: King Kahn And The Shrines, Big Scary, Smith Westerns, Superhumanoids, Dinosaur Bones

June 17, 2013

Today’s music is not a fan of your significant other.  Enjoy.

:King Kahn And The Shrines – Born To Die:  This track has the psychedelic soul approach that I’ve come to expect from King Kahn And The Shrines, but I’m a bit surprised at how tame it is.  Maybe they rip things up more on the actual album?  Merge will put out Idle No More on September 3.

:Big Scary – Luck Now:  Melbourne, Australia’s Big Scary signed to the always stellar Barsuk last week, and this song is off of their upcoming full length.  I think it’s one of the more lush things I’ve heard in 2013.  Not Art is due out on September 17.

:Smith Westerns – Idol:  And with the arrival of this pretty little pop number, I’m now officially anxious to get my hands on the new Smith Westerns’ LP.  Here’s hoping it doesn’t disappoint.  Mom + Pop will put out Soft Will on June 25.

:Superhumanoids – Bad Weather:  A new full length from Superhumanoids was actually supposed to come out last week, but it got bumped at the last minute.  Oh well.  At least the band used the delay as an opportunity to provide this slow burning gem.  Exhibitionists is due out August 6 via Innovative Leisure.

:Dinosaur Bones – Spins In Circles:  I had almost forgotten how much I like Dinosaur Bones.  This Strokes-like single is off a new album titled Shaky Dream, which is due out August 6 via Dine Alone Records.  I think it could be a good one.

Quickdraw: Chvrches, TV Girl, Smith Westerns, Pure Bathing Culture, Shark Week

Today’s music ain’t got no time for that.  Enjoy.

:Chvrches – Gun:  I’m not sure this if is a better single than Recover or The Mother We Share, but it’s certainly dancier than those two songs combined.  Try not to pull anything, OK?  Chvrches are all set to release the Gun single on July 15 via Virgin/Goodbye.

:TV Girl – She Smokes In Bed:  While browsing the web completely hungover and thinking I might die, I came across this new song from TV Girl.  It made things better.  They’re such a good pop act.  The band will put out the Lonely Woman EP on June 18 via their Bandcamp page.

:Smith Westerns – 3AM Spiritual:  As is always the case with the Smith Westerns, this is a song with a really pretty sound.  I recommend headphones just so you can hear all of its glorious little details.  Soft Will is all set to be released on June 25 through Mom + Pop.

:Pure Bathing Culture – Pendulum:  I wasn’t exactly a fan of this track when I first gave it a listen, but it’s grown on me as I’ve spent more time with it.  Just took me a bit to appreciate how well crafted it is, I suppose.  Moon Tides is due out August 20 via Partisan.

:Shark Week – Go West:  Here’s a new single from a band that played SOTO’s SXSW day party, DC VS Austin.  It’s got a spaghetti western thing going on that I really dig.  The band is set to put out the Santurce 7″ on July 30 via Analog Edition Records.

I’m fairly certain yesterday was trying to kill me, but there was one moment where the sun shined through, and it was when I gave the new Smith Westerns track a listen.  Now it’s your turn, friends.  The band will release their third full length, Soft Will, on June 11 via Mom + Pop (they just signed to them).  Enjoy.

:Smith Westerns – Varsity:  Not much in 2013 has been as easy on the ears as this pop gem.  I’m not sure the Smith Westerns could make an ugly song if they tried.
