Show Of The Week

March 30, 2016

I’m super excited for two shows – both of which are album release parties – this week, and since they’re on different nights, I’m highly recommending both.

1)  Pageantry will be celebrating the release of their new album, Influence, at Cheer Up Charlie’s on Friday.  Also on the bill is a variety of SOTO favs – Good Field, Borrisokane, Lomelda and Birthday Club.  That’s an all-around great lineup.  Be there.

2)  Dana Falconberry & Medicine Bow will be at Stateside Theater on Saturday in celebration of the release of their awesomely titled album From The Forest Came The Fire.  I suspect it’ll be an enchanting evening.  Don’t miss it.

BONUS Show Recommendations:

- Thor and Friends, The Dan Ryan, Little Mazarn at the Mohawk
- Greg Dulli, Derrick Brown at the Central Presbyterian Church
- Loteria, The Two Lips, Que Pasa?, Dryspell at Hotel Vegas

- Melvins, Napalm Death, Melt Banana at the Mohawk

Horse Thief, Pageantry (Jennifer)

May 20, 2015

It’s not news that weekends in Austin for a live music fan tend to consist of having to choose between several quality shows.  For instance, I’ve already happily made my decision for this Friday night, but if I could fit in another show I would totally go see Horse Thief  (via Denton and Oklahoma City) and Pageantry (also hailing from Denton). Both bands are excellent purveyors of a lush, layered, and an occasionally soaring, anthemic sound that is familiar and comforting but also pleasantly surprising and unexpected. Their show together is this Friday at the Historic Scoot Inn with Reed Turner. Go in my place and support some talent from our neighbors!

Pompeii, Pageantry (Jennifer)

October 15, 2014

Austin quartet Pompeii have returned from a five year hiatus to release their latest album, Loom, this week through Red Eye Transit. It’s filled with lush, string filled atmospherics and ambient melodies on songs like the title track and Celtic Mist along with more intense and driving shoegaze vibe on tracks like Blueprint and Drift.  The band will be holding their album release party and tour kickoff (including an appearance at CMJ) this Friday at Holy Mountain along with special guests Pageantry, Botany, and Football, Etc.  If you can’t pick up a copy of the album at the show, you can order from their website.

Speaking of Pageantry, they just released a stand alone single, Spine, as a hint of what lies ahead as the band finishes up their first full length album and prepares for a string of tour dates, including appearances at CMJ in NYC. Spine kicks off with a playful organ intro as it segues into the darker contrast of its somewhat ominous lyrics (“Feared you a lot last year/Every time you obeyed I smelled blood on your breath”), and then soars with a pristine slide guitar solo, dreamy vocals, and a taut rhythm section. I’m a big fan of their expansive, layered sound; it’s hard to believe sometimes that they’re only a trio. As mentioned up above, they’ll be playing at Holy Mountain this Friday.

The Versus Project (Single Premiere)

January 14, 2014

The snazzy folks over at the Austin-based Oscillation Records have teamed up with SOTO favs Borrisokane for a little something called The Versus Project.  The idea behind it is that six Texas bands will each interpret a Borrisokane track, and then Borrisokane will later return the favor by covering a song from each of the participating acts.  The Baker Family have already done their cover, and now SOTO has the pleasure of debuting Pageantry’s totally different but stellar take on Elizabeth.  Enjoy.

By the way, there’s also a plan for each of the bands involved to do more than just covers, and on January 31 a Kickstarter will be launched to gauge demand for a box set that would feature six discs of music and collages by Shawn Magill (one of her pieces is at the top of the post).  If you ask me, that sounds pretty rad.

Pageantry, Yum (Jennifer)

While I do love and support my favorite Austin-based bands, it’s also great to find new favorites from across Texas. One of my latest discoveries is the Denton-based “pop gaze” trio Pageantry. They released their debut EP, Friends Of The Year, last month.  The four song effort is packed with a lot of stuff – layered guitars and vocals complemented by a rhythm section that weaves a variety of sonic textures into an engaging sound that leaves listeners wanting more.  Their Austin record release show will be taking place at the Mohawk with Borrisokane and The Calm Blue Sea this Friday. This is a fantastic triple bill of Texas bands that I highly recommend.

Thanks to the guys behind the Hardly Sound documentary series, I found out about Yum, an up and coming Austin trio. They make sweet, dreamy indie pop that could be the soundtrack to your summer romance. A full length album is in the works, but in the meantime you can stream or download a few tunes from their Bandcamp and Soundcloud pages. The band’s story will be highlighted in an episode of Hardly Sound’s 2nd season. No available air date as of yet (the 2nd season is still in production and seeking financial support). I’m looking forward to hearing more from this band along and exploring their personal stories behind the songs.
