I am not a festival guy, and right now everyone around me keeps yelling about how they can’t wait to see some crappy band at ACL Fest the next couple weekends, and I couldn’t care less. The influx of idiots to the downtown area the next couple of weekends will be great for our city, its economy, but destroys any sense of decorum that may be left in our music scene. Thousands of people who could give two shits about music any other time of the year pretending like they ‘enjoy music’ lumping all the darlings of the now into one show that they could never consume does nothing to make me think you love music.

The only fest that I actually enjoy is Fun Fun Fun Fest, and that is really due to the fact that the people who attend don’t care about that radio hit song from Fun, but really want to hear the Cro Mags, or _____ *insert band that the masses have never heard of. Plus, ACL Fest never once thought about a metal band in their lineup, to their credit, it is not their crowd. So the following is a nice list of FFF Black Stage bands this year, and a few covers from metal bands of artists playing ACL. Enjoy your Festival, I will be holed up until the end of the month.

:August Burns Red – Count It All As Lost:
:The Locust – Aotkpta:
:Between The Buried And Me – Little 15:
:Slayer – Disciple:
:Body Count – Evil Dick:
:Quicksand – Thorn In My Side:
:Creamatory – Black Celebration:
:Pelican – Ephemeral:

This month finally marks the demise of summer. By now I am exhausted from all the metal festivals, and the damn heat destroyed all the beautiful things. Fall begins to decay the rotting corpses left to char in the sunlight, and gives birth to some of the best metal of the year. To be completely honest, this set includes a song from the best album of the last decade and first from the band Carcass in almost twenty years. I am that confident in saying so. I won’t disparage the other new tracks on this list, but they can only live in the shadow of Surgical Steel (the new album from Carcass).  I did include some very good releases though, wear protective headgear when listening to Fleshgod Apocalypse and Grave, whilst the couple of ‘vintage’ tracks are bands I plan on seeing live this month, because it is all about me in the end. So enjoy the preparation for the dark times, and as some have been known to say, Winter is Coming.

:Between The Buried And Me – Astral Body:
:Trivium – Strife:
:Carcass – Captive Bolt Pistol:
:The Devil Wears Prada – Home For Grave:
:Fleshgod Apocalypse – Elegy:
:Skeletonwitch – Burned From Bone:
:Grave – Morbid Ascent:
:Red Fang – Blood Like Cream:
:Iron Maiden – Powerslave:
:Orange Goblin – Acid Trial:

In case you didn’t know, the metal festival known as the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Tour rolls into Austin tomorrow. When Ozzfest took a dirt nap back in the mid oughts, it seemed to be a signal of times changing. Huge festivals like Coachella, Lollapalooza, ACL Fest and Bonnaroo all decided that parking in a city and letting fans come to them was a better business model than trying to make a nationwide summer tour. For dedicated metal fans there are plenty of destination festivals, Maryland Deathfest, New England Metal and Hardcore, and Europe, who are the patriarchs of the metal festival.

In a nutshell, I hate festivals. They are designed for people who sort of like music, but really want to say they went somewhere cool and ate a bunch of funnel cakes. For those of us who darken the door of music venues almost daily some weeks, they can be cumbersome at best. What they do accomplish though, is exposing people on the fringe of music to the center, if just for a short while. Mayhem Fest ends this weekend, but I thought I should acknowledge the effort to bring metal to the mainstream, and give you a song from almost all of the artists this month. Enjoy!

As our country celebrates its birth this week, I am doing the most American thing possible, taking the easy way out. I thought about doing all kinds of heady thought metal for the controversies surrounding recent SCOTUS decisions, and the way our rights are being taken from us every day, maybe a medley of bands with members who have pierced the veil, or even something about love and relationships, but all that required thought above a third grade level, and I don’t have that energy this time of year. I am thinking of beer, boobs and ‘Merica

So with that in mind I put together some of my favorite American Metal songs for you to jam out with over the holiday weekend, and doing that other cherished pastime in the USA, pissing off other people. Enjoy your rash consumerism, lack of coherent thought and flailing democracy whilst these epic tunes bludgeon your skull, Happy Independence Day!

:Soilent Green – Lovesick:
:Cannibal Corpse – Force Fed Broken Glass:

This month, I started thinking about Summer, not only due to the triple digit heat outside, but this time of year has always held a lot of great times, especially in this part of the country. Texas is all about outdoors, even in the heat of the season blasting you from above, rivers, lakes, boats and beers all bring back some incredible memories and the music I jammed during some of the great times of my life.

When I really think about what kind of metal represents the summertime I go back and start pulling some of the best stoner metal and sludge metal. Top down, Fu Manchu blasting on the stereo, ladies in bikinis and the sweet leaf wafting from every pore, that my friends is June. School’s out, kick back and enjoy some tasty grooves …

On my way home last night, my phone started going insane with the news that Jeff Hanneman had passed away at the age of 49 from liver failure. I didn’t believe all the text messages that people were sending around, knowing what kind of fan I am of Slayer even my Mom sent me a message and I knew this was real.

People die every day. Some too early, some too young, some you know others you don’t. When a legend passes, many people don’t know what it means to you, honestly I didn’t know how much he meant to me until I realized I would never see him play again.

Their music coddled me through some tough times, gave me hope for music in the dark ages, and inspired me to plug away each week on my radio show. The world of metal is so much darker without Jeff Hanneman in it, and he can never be replaced. If you have never had the pleasure of listening to Slayer, take a few moments and listen to a few songs I have selected, and for you fans, give hails to another metal legend gone too early. Peace be with you Jeff, we will always stay metal in your name.

After the death of the touring festivals for more mainstream music in the ‘90s, metal took the reins via Sharon Ozbourne and Ozzfest. It revived the tradition of pairing some of the largest names in metal with new up and coming artists, as well as local bands, and unfortunately some occasional crap, too.

The festival(s) in the last decade have taken on a new skin with parking in one location and getting fans, which have the cash to travel, to come to them. Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Coachella, Voodoo, ACL and so on, have become an elitist haven for watered down lineups meant for the highest bidders to make a pilgrimage of douchery, and have an excuse to rip off their shirts and complain about how hot it is standing outside while waiting for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

For the rest of us punks and metalheads, a few smart people keep the big tours happening. Summer Slaughter, Vans Warped Tour, and the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Tour maintain opportunities to see a lot of bands in one day in your city at a reasonable price. I wanted to take this month to give you a preview of the latter.

:Amon Amarth – The Pursuit of Vikings:
:Behemoth – Prometherion:

Happy Metal Fun Time – SXSW Edition (Chuck)

March 1, 2013

Springtime officially begins this month and we celebrate so many things, Spring Break, March Madness and for many SXSW blocks off a major portion of the calendar. In years past metal has taken a prominent role as one of the major genres at play, and this year is no exception. Though the official showcases may be a little light in the metal field, there is no shortage of the extreme to be found during the music portion of the conference.

March has also been declared Metal Month by some blogger, or website or label or something, so since my proclivity to the metal art leads me to hail to our month of metal by drinking a lot of bourbon and jager, while at the same time giving you a nice list of SXSW metal to peruse at your leisure. If you are in Austin for the conference and you want to join in the metal mayhem, be sure to see my Big List O’ Metal for the latest updates too, and maybe I’ll buy you a shot as we jam to Clutch.

The tendency to shy away from all things heavy happens every time a terrorist attack happens or a school shooting takes place. It is typical for people to want to be comforted by some crappy sappy tunes to console themselves in times of trouble, but with the recent round of shootings I have been disturbed with another trend happening. Guns, yeah, violent video games, yeah, mental health issues, all possibly culpable, but no one is blaming metal anymore and I am tired of being left out.

I want to hear Diane Feinstein or Chuck Shumer reading violent lyrics from Cannibal Corpse and Slayer in front of Congress, I want to see them try and vilify those they deem fringe again and be faced down in court. For some reason our music is not an influential force in creating chaos in the public arena anymore (if it ever really was), not since Columbine, and they blamed Marilyn Manson ugh. When is the NRA going to point fingers at us metalheads and grow our audience again…well, if nothing else, I will do my part. To grow the audience, not kill innocent people.

February is the month of love and crap, but it is also the time when all those albums that would get released the last two months finally hit stores. Here are some of the metal jams you need to be on top of this month, like your lover.

:Clutch – Earth Rocker:
:Zombified – Pull The Trigger:
:Cult Of Luna – I The Weapon:
