Happy Metal Fun Time (Chuck)

My favorite month of the year arrived this week, October marks the beginning of the dark times. Fall in the South doesn’t really begin until this month, it starts to finally cool off, and the time change will make it nice and dark on Hollow’s Eve. Really for me it allows metal to sound right for the holiday, at Christmas it’s just odd, but Halloween? Perfect! I looked back and I haven’t done a good list for your orange and black partying in a few years so I thought I might oblige, plus, we have a plethora of clowns running around scaring the crap out of people and what could be more metal than that!  13 tracks that will not only melt the faces of all your trick-or-treaters, but could give heart attack inducing paralysis to the finest upstanding adults in your neighborhood (with a couple fun ones mixed in for good measure). Enjoy, and happy haunting!

Raised Eyebrows: Halloween Blues (Randy)

In lieu of Halloween, I thought I’d put something together to jam for your Halloween festivities. I’m not a big Halloween fan, but I do really enjoy the idea of human beings entertaining the idea of wolfmen and witches. I also dig a good murder ballad and/or psychotic country song. What that says about me … I’m not sure, but maybe it means I dig on Halloween more than I think. This playlist is changing lives already.

Round Robin – I’m The Wolfman (Thanks to Mike Buck who jammed this on Blue Monday on 10/26/15, Sun Radio 100.1)

The Sonics – The Witch (Was reminded of this on Elk Mating Ritual, 91.7 KOOP.)

Howlin Wolf – Evil (The man’s name alone is enough for anything relating to Halloween.)

Terry Allen – The Wolfman of Del Rio (Fort Worth’s greatest treasure.)

Michael Hurley – Werewolf (Snock truly understands the wolfman.)

The Kossoy Sisters – Poor Ellen Smith (A rad murder ballad complete with blood stained lyrics.)

Roky Erickson – I Walked with a Zombie (Halloween is Roky time.)

The Rolling Stones – Too Much Blood (A disco song about blood.)

Porter Wagoner – The Rubber Room (A country song about a man inside an asylum – dig the slapback!)

Eddie Noack – Psycho (Leon Payne’s outrageous classic.)

Neil Young – Vampire Blues (A spooky Shakey number.)

Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London – Live (Warren talks about the werewolf looking to murder James Taylor – nuff said.)

The great hip-hop holiday of Halloween is upon us! I call it a hip-hop holiday because it has produced some of the most inexplicable novelty tracks of all time, maybe not a greater quantity than Christmas, but certainly far more unnecessary.  Below, I bring you a playlist of Halloween hip-hop sure to bring your spooktacular revelry to the next killer level.

SONG OF THE MONTH:

:Froggy Fresh – Halloween:  Forced by the dastardly donut company to change his name from Krispy Kreme, Froggy Fresh hasn’t let that stop him from bringing us the simple-not-simplistic, carefully delivered lines of this All Hallow’s masterpiece.

OCTOBER MIX:

:Geto Boys – Mind Playing Tricks On Me:
:Ras Kass – Interview With A Vampire:
:Lil Wayne – Mr. Carter (Kevin Schneider Remix):
:RJD2 – The Horror:
:Cousin Fik – I Am A Vampire (Featuring Droop-E):
:Dr. Dre – Murder Ink Instrumental:
:MC Chris – Halloween:

Well, it’s the time of year each and every adult either despises or celebrates – Halloween. Whether you have kids and are excited about putting them in some kind of semi-ironic or cute get-up, or don’t and are elated/exasperated by the idea that there will also be adults in semi-ironic or cute get-ups (the sexy versions), there is one absolute about Halloween that you can’t deny: it produces the very best of the worst novelty hip-hop. It can be argued that mainstream hip hop is already full of monsters (i.e. people that brag about cars, money, sex, and violence), but when given the chance to riff on fictional bad guys, rappers can sometimes suffer from a lack of inspiration, producing some of the most awkward yet endearing tracks for public consumption this side of Christmas novelty rap (a subject I’ll address here in December). With all the backhanded praise I’ve just heaped on Halloween novelty rap, you just know there’s gonna be a bunch on this mix, and you’re right!

If you all aren’t going to the free Leprechaun In The Hood screening at the Alamo tonight, I expect to see you at the Blackheart for Side One Track One Presents. Also, listen to Hip Hop Hooray on Sunday from 2-3:30 where I’ll be playing my favorite Halloween novelty hip hop along with my friend and annual bringer of the Addams Groove: DJ John Grossyall.
