Quickdraw: Gang Of Youths, Dinosaur Jr., Iceage, Hinds, Bodega

March 6, 2018

Gang Of Youths – Straight To You (Nick Cave Cover)

Gang Of Youths are right at the top of my “must see at SXSW” list.  Looks like I should have a few shots.

3.14.18 – Secret Sounds @ Sidewinder / 5:30PM
3.15.18 – Vinyl Me, Please Showcase @ Empire Garage / 12:00PM
3.15.18 – Aussie BBQ @ Australia House – Lucille’s / 5:40PM
3.16.18 – Noise Trade @ The Blackheart / 1:00PM
3.16.18 – SX San Jose @ Hotel San Jose / 7:00PM
3.17.18 – Brooklyn Vegan @ Cheer Up Charlies / TBD

By the way, they did this Nick Caver cover for an Amazon playlist.  It’s a song that fits them well.

Dinosaur Jr. – Hold Unknown

How are Dinosaur Jr. still so damn good?  It boggles my mind.  In any case, this rad new tune is part of the Adult Swim Singles Program.

Iceage – Pain Killer (Featuring Sky Ferreira)

Iceage have finally announced a new album – it’s called Beyondless, and it’ll be out on May 4.  My guess is that it ends up being one of my favorites this year.  See the band at Barracuda on May 27.

Hinds – The Club

Like Gang Of Youths, Hinds are on my “must see at SXSW” list.  Here’s another very catchy tune off of their anticipated sophomore album, I Don’t Run, which is due out April 6.

Bodega – How Did This Happen?

Over the last few days I’ve revisited this new single from Bodega a lot.  It’s heavy handed lyrically, but the song itself is so hooky that I don’t really care.  I may have to catch them at SXSW.

Quickdraw: Dinosaur Jr., Weaves, Shura, No Joy, The Album Leaf

May 31, 2016

Music!  Enjoy.

:Dinosaur Jr.  – Tiny:  You really have to give it up to Dinosaur Jr., they’ve been at it for centuries and they still sound rad.  Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not is due out August 5 via Jagjaguwar.

:Weaves – Coo Coo:  Here’s a rather playful, quirky new one from Weaves.  I’m fully expecting their debut LP to be stellar.  The band’s self titled album is due out June 17 via Kanine.

:Shura – What’s It Gonna Be?:  Oh boy am I in love with this track from Shura.  It’s a perfect little mix of pop and R&B, and I just want to hug it.  Nothing’s Real is due out July 8 via Interscope.

:No Joy – A Thorn in Garland’s Side:  The always wonderfully noisy No Joy are set to release multiple EPs this year, and I’m more than ready to take them all in.  This catchy number is the first single off of the first EP.  The Drool Sucker EP is due out July 15 via Topshelf.

:The Album Leaf – Back To The Start:  The Album Leaf have signed to Relapse and announced a new album (their first since 2010′s A Chorus Of Storytellers).  I think this track sounds immaculate.  Between Waves is due out August 26.

Quickdraw: Of Montreal, Dinosaur Jr, Porcelain Raft, Widowspeak, Tree

July 16, 2013

Today’s music wants to live its life like it’s alive.  Enjoy.

:Of Montreal – Fugitive Air:  Over the years Kevin Barnes has done some rather adventurous stuff with Of Montreal’s sound, so it’s nice to see him scale things back a bit.  I really like this jangly piece of garage rock.  Lousy With Sylvianbriar is due out October 8 via Polyvinyl.

:Dinosaur Jr. – The Only Other Way:  Not much is as impressive as Dinosaur Jr’s streak of great songs over these last few years.  This one is the result of a Skullcandy promotion where the band teamed up with the company to release a special headphones package.  I believe it’s out today.

:Porcelain Raft – The Way Out:  It would appear as though Porcelain Raft have gotten even better at crafting sprawling arrangements.  The new album is going to be great if it’s as big and confident as this track.  Permanent Signal is due out August 20 via Secretly Canadian.

:Widowspeak – True Believer:  The album that Widowspeak put out earlier this year is certainly a good one, but I actually think this dreamy number trumps it.  Can’t wait to hear the rest of their new effort.  The Swamps EP is due out October 29 via Captured Tracks.

:Tree – Demons (Featuring Beat Culture And Lena Kuhn):  There’s so much 90s-enthused music out there these days, I guess it makes sense that someone would eventually dip into the realm of trip hop.  Glad it went well.  Tree will release the Demons EP on August 13 via Apollo Records.

Dinosaur Jr.

March 21, 2013

In this week’s totally random news, Dinosaur Jr. have covered Phoenix.  Yes, I know the artwork up above says remix, but that’s not right.  Actually, it’s probably more a of cover-remix hybrid.  Or something.  At any rate, Dinosaur Jr. are currently touring around in support of the LP they put out last year, and Phoenix is about to release a new album titled Bankrupt! on April 23.  Enjoy.

:Dinosaur Jr. – Entertainment (Phoenix Cover):  Phoenix’s original version is a pretty fun track, but I think I prefer Dinosaur Jr.’s slow burning take.  Guess I’ll always be a sucker for guitar solos.

Top 25 Albums Of 2012: Part 2

December 4, 2012

And just like that, we’ve arrived at the second part of my Top 25 Albums of 2012.  As I’ve said, I easily could have listed 50 releases, but I realized that half of those would have been albums that I only listen to when I’m in a particular mood.  In other words, they’re not immediately accessible, and that to me knocks them down a notch.  So, if you’re looking for 25 releases that you can immediately dive into and love, this is the place to be.  Enjoy.

20) Why? – Mumps, etc

There are few things better than listening to Yoni Wolf as he unloads a lyrical collage of images right onto your brain.  Oh, you don’t want to pay attention?  That’s OK.  There’s also plenty to sing-a-long with.

:Why? – White English:

19) Thee Oh Sees – Putrifiers II

Whenever I hear anything off this album, I immediately want to be in a sweaty club somewhere watching Thee Oh Sees play.  Putrifiers II is a fantastically fuzzed-out blast.

:Thee Oh Sees – Flood’s New Light:

18) Dinosaur Jr. – I Bet On Sky

I love that Dinosaur Jr. are still cranking out quality albums.  Those guys definitely have the right to just sit on a couch somewhere, and yet they’re out and about rocking harder than most of us ever will.

:Dinosaur Jr. – Pierce The Morning Rain:

17) Yellow Ostrich – Strange Land

Strange Land didn’t hit me like last year’s The Mistress did, but it does feature a nice step forward sound-wise for the band, and there are some really fantastic tracks on it.

:Yellow Ostrich – The Shakedown:

16) The Dirty Projectors – Swing Lo Magellan

I’m not sure the Dirty Projectors will ever really be easily accessible, but I do think that Swing Lo Magellan is them actually giving it a shot.  The album is loud, oddly hooky, and just so very interesting to listen to.

:The Dirty Projectors – Offspring Are Blank:

Quickdraw: Dinosaur Jr, hitRECord, Tennis, Crystal Castles, Young Fathers

October 1, 2012

Today’s music is here to tell you that it’s the first of the month, so you should pay your rent.  Enjoy.

:Dinosaur Jr – Pierce The Morning Rain:  These guys just put out this rocking single, and they’re playing the Mohawk this Thursday with Shearwater.  That sounds like reason enough for me to throw them a mention.  Buy their album and a ticket to the nearly sold-out show, friends!  I Bet On The Sky is available now via Jagjaguwar.

:hitRECord – Move On The Sun:  For those of you that don’t live in a world dominated by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, hitRECord is his collaborative production company, and this solid pop song is part of a 78-artist compilation that he and his partners just released.  You should check out what else they’re doing.  It’s all pretty neat.

:Tennis – Guiding Light (Television Cover):  This duo have been kind of quiet lately, but late last week they rolled this lovely cover out, announced some tour dates, and then said they’ll soon be heading into the studio to put together a new album.  I’m excited.  Young And Old is available now on Fat Possum.

:Crystal Castles – Wrath Of God:  About a week ago this act officially announced the details for their upcoming album, and then they released this intense track.  I recommend pulsing lights and headphones.  (III) is expected everywhere on November 5 via Casablanca/Universal Republic.  Also, you should try to catch them when they Emo’s East on October 13.

:Young Fathers – Deadline:  I’m not at all familiar with this band, but they just signed to Anticon, and the world seems to suddenly be buzzing about them.  This song is cool.  What else should I be giving a listen?  Tell me!  Look for Young Fathers to release Tape One in late November.
