Quickdraw: Bass Drum Of Death, Pity Sex, Happy Diving, Little Big League, King Tuff

September 15, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Bass Drum Of Death – For Blood:  The press releases for the new Bass Drum Of Death album have been interesting in that they blatantly admit the band’s goal is to land a mainstream audience.  It’s sort of refreshing, really.  There’s usually some elaborate story that details how a “cleaned up sound” came about, but here it’s just simply because the band wants more fans.  I can respect that.  Rip This is due October 7 via Innovative Leisure.

:Pity Sex – Acid Reflex:  For some reason it’s taken an eternity for me to fully come around on Pity Sex.  They totally have that 90s rock sound that I adore on an almost obsessive level, so I don’t know what I’ve been waiting for.  The band’s split 7″ with Adventures is due out October 7 via Run For Cover Records.

:Happy Diving – Sad Planet:  Happy Diving are a band out of the Bay Area that I like a lot.  This new track of theirs sees them giving a bit of a shout out to the Weezer from way back, and I think it’s pretty rad.  Look for Big World to be released on October 21 via Father/Daughter Records.

:Little Big League – Tropical Jinx:  I haven’t at all been on the hunt for a warmer version of Speedy Ortiz, but Little Big League are exactly that and somehow I feel like it’s exactly what I’ve been waiting for.  I blame Michelle Zauner’s alluring voice for all of it.  Tropical Jinx will be released on October 14 via Run For Cover Records.

:King Tuff – Headbanger:  This song features some immensely goofy/lame songwriting, but it’s catchy and fun so I’m sharing it.  On a related note, I can’t wait to hear slick rock numbers like this one played alongside King Tuff’s older, more psychedelic efforts.   Sub Pop will release Black Moon Spell on September 23.

Quickdraw: Diarrhea Planet, Action Bronson, Roses, Speedy Ortiz, Bass Drum Of Death

Music!  Enjoy.

:Diarrhea Planet – Spooners:  Here’s the track that Diarrhea Planet did for Adult Swim’s Single Series.  If you can listen to it and not want to immediately grab a beer and find somewhere to rock and party your face off, then you’re dead on the inside.

:Action Bronson – Easy Rider:  I’ve been impatiently waiting for Action Bronson to release something new, so I was pumped when this song popped up the other day.  It’s the first single off of his upcoming LP and it’s immaculately produced by his usual cohort, Party Supplies.  A new album titled Mr. Wonderful is on the way via VICE/Atlantic.

:Roses – The Fog:  Roses are a newer band (started by Juan Velazquez, formerly of Abe Vigoda) that I’ve quickly become fond of.  Recently I shared their excellent song It’s Over, and now I have another somewhat new wave, largely 90s-enthused gem for you.  The Dreamlover EP is out now via Group Tightener.

:Speedy Ortiz – Lost Something In The Hills:  All week I’ve been really digging this Sibylle Baier cover that Speedy Ortiz did for Rookie Magazine.  They’re a band that usually blast right out of the speakers, so it’s nice to hear them slow things down a bit.  Also, the lyrics here are fantastic.

:Bass Drum Of Death – Left For Dead:  I’m not sure how those who you love the fuzz that Bass Drum of Death usually pack will react to it being replaced by a cleaner, straight up rock n’ roll sound, but I don’t mind it.  At least they’re still really hooky.  The band will release Rip This on October 7 via Innovative Leisure.

Quickdraw: Bass Drum Of Death, Lemuria, Braids, The Mantles, Elle Goulding

June 3, 2013

Today’s music is brought to you by me.  Enjoy.

:Bass Drum Of Death – Crawling:  This fuzzy track is loud and catchy, and I really like it.  If you’re feeling like you may soon need a new rock record to soundtrack your summer, I think Bass Drum Of Death may be able to deliver.   The band will release their self titled album on June 25 via Innovative Leisure.

:Lemuria – Chihuly:  I want to grab Lemuria, return to the 90s, and then watch as they just totally rule the world for a while.  Who has a time machine?  Get The Distance Is So Big when it’s released on June 18 via Bridge Nine.  The band will play the Mohawk on June 15.

:Braids – In Kind:  As was the case with Braids’ last single, this is six minutes plus of superbly crafted art rock.  Hopefully that’s your thing, or this might be the song that drives you insane.  The In Kind // Amends 12″ is due out June 11, and the Flourish // Perish full length is expected on August 20 via Arbutus/Full Time Hobby/Flemish Eye.

:The Mantles – Shadow Of Your Step:  I was already excited to check out the Mantles’ upcoming album, but this garage pop gem has officially pushed me into can’t wait territory.  Guess we’ll see how it turns out when Long Enough To Leave gets released on June 18 through Slumberland.

:Elle Goulding – Tessellate (Alt-J Cover):  If you haven’t noticed by now, no one covers a song like Elle Goulding does.  She should just do an entire album of covers.  I’d buy it.  Twice.  This is a one-off effort, so grab it while you can.
