Quickdraw: A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Martin Crane, Karen O, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Pujol

Music!  Enjoy.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Hey, You’re Mine:  If you’re feeling bleary-eyed this morning, this pleasant pop tune from A Sunny Day In Glasgow should help.  The Planning Weed Like It’s Acid/Life Is Loss EP is due out November 13 via and Mis Ojos Discos.

:Martin Crane – Gunk Of Stars:  I’m really excited about Martin Crane’s upcoming solo debut.  His band Brazos (formerly of Austin) has always been a favorite of mine, and I think it’s great he’s switching things up a bit.  Physical Therapy is due out November 20 via Inscape.

:Karen O – I Shall Rise:  Here’s one that Karen O cut specifically for the upcoming Tomb Raider game. It’s smokey and dramatic, and I love it.  Rise Of The Tomb Raider will be out on November 10.

:Cymbals Eat Guitars – Aerobed:  This track is Cymbals Eat Guitars’ contribution to the 7″ series that Kevin Devine has been rolling out.  I’m all about how epic it is.  Devinyl Splits No. 4 is due out November 13 via Bad Timing Records.

:Pujol – Designer Feelings:  I don’t believe Pujol could write a non-hooky song if he tried.  This is the latest track of his that I can’t seem to take off of repeat.  The Kisses EP is due out November 27 via Bartertown Co-Op.

Quickdraw: While We Were Sleeping – Part 1

January 5, 2015

SOTO is back!  Naturally, taking a month to engage in year-end lists and lengthy naps means I missed some stuff, so before I go all in on 2015 I’m sharing some interesting singles that were released in December.  There will be 10 tracks today and another 10 tomorrow.  Enjoy.

:Purity Ring – Push Pull:  I realize this is just one track off of Purity Ring’s impending sophomore effort, but it sure does seem as though they’ve dialed things back to sound more like Chvrches.  It could be a move that works for them.  This first single is certainly far from bad.  The band’s currently untitled LP is expected out later this year via 4AD.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – In Love With Useless (The Timeless Geometry In The Tradition Of Passing) (Fang Island Remix):  If the original version of this song (and it’s wildly blissful ways) has always proved to be a bit overwhelming for you, then Fang Island’s relaxed take on it will probably delight your ears.  This remix is a one-off, so grab it while you can.

:Twin Shadow – Turn Me Up:  George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) has made the jump to Warner Bros and is now officially set to release a follow-up to 2012′s Confess.  My guess is that it will be a wonderfully dramatic effort that I listen to far too often.  Eclipse is due out March 17 via Warner Bros.

:Sleater-Kinney – Surface Envy:  The #1 album on my “must have immediately” list is Sleater-Kinney’s new one.  They’re an absolute favorite of mine, and I can’t wait to indulge in their reunion tunes.  No Cities To Love is due out January 20 via Sub Pop.

:Dan Deacon – Feel The Lightning:  The always interesting Dan Deacon is back with a new album.  This track is weirdly accessible, and I’m super impressed that it’s 100% Deacon (even the “lady” vocals are actually him).  Gliss Riffer is due out February 24 via Domino.

:Knifight – Young Lovers:  Knifight are one of my favorite Austin bands.  I love their big, intense post punk sound and the way that it aims to dominate you.  You’ll see what I mean when you hit play on this heavy tune.  V will be released on February 10.

:Doomtree – Gray Duck:  POS and his talented cohorts have rallied together for another Doomtree album, and I think it’s going to play well for those of you who fell in love with Run The Jewels-esque hip hop last year.  All Hands is due out January 27 via Doomtree Records.

:Menace Beach – Tastes Like Medicine:  The 90s lover in me is all about Menace Beach.  The band shares their name with an NES game, and their indie rock sound is definitely a fitting tribute to that decade.  Ratworld is due out January 27 via Memphis Industries.

:Metric – The Fatal Gift:  It doesn’t seem as though Emily Haines intends on putting out another solo effort, so we’re all just going to have to make due with this beautiful slow-burner from her main squeeze Metric.  By the way, Haines says this unfinished track “stands alone” so you should snatch it up while it’s readily available.

:Amen Dunes – Song To The Siren:  Here’s Amen Dunes covering This Mortal Coil’s cover of a Tim Buckley song.  Why the whole roundabout approach?  I have no clue.  I only care about it being a stunning track.  Share it with everyone.  The Cowboy Worship EP is due out January 20 via Sacred Bones.

Quickdraw: White Reaper, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Merchandise, JJ, Tijuana Panthers

June 2, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:White Reaper – Cool:  I’m quickly becoming a big fan of White Reaper.  They really know how to write a hook.  Also, I get the impression they can rip up a room, so I’m very much looking forward to July 2, when they’ll be in Austin to rock Holy Mountain.  The band will put out a self titled EP on June 24 via Polyvinyl.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Bye Bye Big Ocean (The End):  And with the arrival of this masterfully crafted gem, A Sunny Day In Glasgow are 3/3 when it comes to singles for their upcoming album.  I can’t wait to hear the rest of it.  Look for Sea When Absent on June 24 via Lefse.  They play the Mohawk on July 21.

:Merchandise – Little Killer:  Despite the fact that Merchandise have put out a handful of albums, this rad piece of pop marks my first experience with then.  Who has some other song recommendations?  Tell me!  The band will release After The End on August 24 via 4AD.

:JJ – All White Everything:  “Bitches get in trouble” is a line that gets dropped near the end of this track, and every time I hear it I can’t help but chuckle.  Not many can keep shit real while sounding classy, so good on JJV will be released on August 19 via Secretly Canadian.

:Tijuana Panthers – NOBO:  This is one slinky number from Tijuana Panthers.  If you happened to skip work today in favor of hanging out on a porch somewhere, then you’re going to love this song.  Wayne Interest is set to be released on June 3 via Innovative Leisure.

Quickdraw: Pujol, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Twin Shadow, A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Swans

April 17, 2014

Music!  Enjoy.

:Pujol – Circles:  This will sound odd, but I’m actually relieved that the first couple of singles off of Pujol’s upcoming full length have failed to make me think it’s going to be much different than his last effort.  He churns out simple but catchy rock ‘n’ roll tunes, and I sincerely hope he never changes anything.  Saddle Creek will release Kludge on May 19.

:The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart – Eurydice:  The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart seem to have set aside a little bit of their shimmer in exchange for a more anthemic sound, and I’m really digging it.  I think it fits them well.  Days Of Abandon is due out on May 13 via Yebo Music.

:Twin Shadow – To The Top:  While I sort of feel like this song could be the title track for some schlocky Sylvester Stallone-lead 80s sports movie, I totally love it.  Here’s a question though, has Twin Shadow somehow warped himself into just being a guilty pleasure?  Details on a new album should be available soon.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – Crushin:  This relaxing number isn’t as much of an attention-grabber as A Sunny Day In Glasgow’s last single, but I do think it’s just as good.  Their upcoming album is now pretty high on my anticipated list.  Expect Sea When Absent to be released on June 24 via Lefse.

:Swans – Oxygen:  Like everything else that comes from the entity known as Swans, this song isn’t something you just casually play in the background.  If you dare hit play, be sure to strap in and get ready to focus.  Look for To Be Kind on May 13 Young God.

A Sunny Day In Glasgow

April 1, 2014

I tend to focus on whatever is new when it comes to my music posts, but today I’m sharing a track from A Sunny Day In Glasgow that I missed back when it was leaked in January.  So why post it three months later?  Because now it’s attached to official word of a new album.  Also, it’s spectacular.  I love how it’s just a massive wall of sound, and there’s a particularly euphoric feel about it that I can’t get enough of.  Enjoy.

:A Sunny Day In Glasgow – In Love With Useless (The Timeless Geometry In The Tradition Of Passing):

Sea When Absent is due out June 24 via Lefse.
