How nice of you to stop by in between debating how the NFL got linked with the military, donating to Puerto Rico, Houston, Florida, and Mexico, and wondering how our government is going to be embroiled in scandal next week!  Sometimes it feels like the apocalypse is speedily on its way to our door, which is a great time to sit back, bump some tunes, crack open a cold one, contemplate the impending end of human life as we know it, and look forward to the weekend.  I made this mix for you – maybe the only one on the internet that stretches from Open Mike Eagle (who released a stellar album this week) all the way to Cardi B – and it roughly goes from more mellow to more turnt, so I hope you enjoy the build up to the end of your week. Happy Friday!

Hey, I’m pretty glad we’re more than halfway through 2017, and man 2020 can’t come quick enough. In the meantime, here’s some rap I picked out for you to listen to today.  Note the local NiYahPEACE on the playlist – she’s having an album release on Saturday at Kick Butt Coffee at 10pm, and you can hear Froggy Fresh with local openers The Triggermen and Protextor at Sidewinder on Monday.  The summer show lull is ending, so I hope you go out and listen to some local rap! You can hear interviews I did with NiYahPEACE and The Triggermen last Sunday over here.

Sometimes it feels like we’re entering another Golden Age of hip-hop, where the records released elevate the art form and challenge other artists to produce better music, and the albums consistently redefine the genre’s edges and limits. Of course, as a result of the speed at which new hip-hop is produced, it feels like we get a new Golden Age a couple times a year. In fact, I’m sure I’ll look back at this playlist in six months and see it as a time capsule of what we thought the last Golden Age would be, and I’m sure I’ll be wrong then, too. Oh well.

I’ve pulled together some Kendrick, of course, and Joey Bada$$ but there are some gems in there that you won’t want to miss, including Your Old Droog’s intense track with Danny Brown, the frenetic grime of Stormzy, and the melodic tilt of Austin-based …&more… with Clifton Dukes. Check out my playlist of Best Hip Hop of 2017 (So Far) here:

We’re nearing the end of Women’s History Month, those 31 days a year when educators and lawmakers put the spotlight on women’s contributions to this great nation of ours.  I’ll add to that today by spotlighting women’s additions to the genre of hip-hop in this month’s playlist.  Women make amazing music even as obstacles exist to them doing so in a genre whose mainstream aspect is characterized by rank misogyny.  Here are some of those women. Listen up and party down.

This past Sunday on my show, inspired by the more than 2.9 million who participated in the Women’s March in Austin and other cites, I played tracks from women in hip-hop. The talented and determined ladies below in some ways represent how all women battle to be heard, both literally and figuratively. While hip hop has come a long way in the last 40 years, it’s still a young genre and it remains steeped in the inherent sexism of our broader culture (haha … “broader culture”) but especially in the machismo and misogyny that’s so prevalent in the sturm and drang of the genre. It’s inching towards becoming the voice of all peoples, and it’s been a great progressive tool in the last several years to assault the forces that keep people down, but the popular side of hop hop – the albums that sell or stream millions – still predominantly portray women as objects.  Well, here are the women in their own voices and words and they are just fucking killing it.

I strongly urge you to listen to – really hear – and patronize these artists and all who are voices that are outside of the mainstream because, hey, the future is female.

Let’s all read that, listen to this mix, and reflect on how we talk about this genre of music and its artists.

SONG OF THE MONTH: The video for Nobody Speak by DJ Shadow feat. Run the Jewels. It’s a knock-down drag out political battle, and seeing old white men say the words of El-P and Killer Mike is somehow very stirring.

This week, the ruling came down that no officers in the Freddie Gray case will be indicted for murder, and we’ve lost at least two black men to blatant racism in the last month. The Austin Police Department has also demonstrated a reprehensible attitude towards its citizens. The continued treatment of black bodies as disposable enemies of the state by a racist police force is despicable and it needs to stop. I’ve made a mix and contributed to my local Black Lives Matter coalition. I will be writing to my police force and attending meetings in the coming months to be an ally to the movement, and I hope you will too.

Exciting news! Starting July 6th, Austin Mic Exchange is moving to Wednesday at 8PM at Spider House Cafe and Ballroom. This means that you work-a-day stiffs (read: me) will finally be able to hear the dope shit coming straight out the mouths of Austinites and still get home in time for your secret Whataburger binge and 11PM bedtime. What a time to be alive!

In other news, it’s hot out, so everyone who just moved here from colder locales, drink a lot of Lone Star, stay out of my secret swimming spots, and please pay your property taxes.

Song of the Month:

:The Avalanches – Frankie Sinatra feat. Danny Brown: The Avalanches are back! This Australian electronic band’s debut LP was beloved in critical and popular circles alike, but that was 16 years go. They drop this single in anticipation of their next album, Wildflower, and they sound as though they’ve retained that keen ear for samples and meticulous beat-craft.

June Mix:

:Tasha the Amazon –  Picasso Leaning:
:Chance the Rapper – No Problem feat. 2Chainz and Lil Wayne:
:DJ Shadow – Nobody Speak feat. Run the Jewels:

We lost Phife Dawg this week at the age of 45 due to complications with diabetes.  Phife was a formative artist for pretty much everyone I know. A Tribe Called Quest both laid the groundwork for and perfected the Native Tongues sound, and were one of the most influential hip-hop groups in history.  Phife’s melodic delivery seemed so casual but is so difficult to replicate, as anyone knows who’s tried to queue up Can I Kick It? for karaoke. He and Tip were the perfect foils – Tip was cheesily romantic, while Phife made self-deprecating and often crude jokes. Phife always seemed to be having the most fun. To lose him at 45 is such a blow to hip hop, and so sad. There has been much already written about Phife, so I’ll just present you with some music to enjoy while you reminisce over how his lyrics shaped you:

:A Tribe Called Quest – Ham N Eggs:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Oh My God:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Scenario:
:A Tribe Called Quest – One Two Shit:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Electric Relaxation:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Jazz (We’ve Got):
:A Tribe Called Quest – His Name is Mutty Ranks:

:A Tribe Called Quest – Can I Kick It?:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Verses from the Abstract:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Find a Way:
:A Tribe Called Quest – Check the Rhime:
