Hip Hop Hooray (Leah)

Well, it’s the time of year each and every adult either despises or celebrates – Halloween. Whether you have kids and are excited about putting them in some kind of semi-ironic or cute get-up, or don’t and are elated/exasperated by the idea that there will also be adults in semi-ironic or cute get-ups (the sexy versions), there is one absolute about Halloween that you can’t deny: it produces the very best of the worst novelty hip-hop. It can be argued that mainstream hip hop is already full of monsters (i.e. people that brag about cars, money, sex, and violence), but when given the chance to riff on fictional bad guys, rappers can sometimes suffer from a lack of inspiration, producing some of the most awkward yet endearing tracks for public consumption this side of Christmas novelty rap (a subject I’ll address here in December). With all the backhanded praise I’ve just heaped on Halloween novelty rap, you just know there’s gonna be a bunch on this mix, and you’re right!

If you all aren’t going to the free Leprechaun In The Hood screening at the Alamo tonight, I expect to see you at the Blackheart for Side One Track One Presents. Also, listen to Hip Hop Hooray on Sunday from 2-3:30 where I’ll be playing my favorite Halloween novelty hip hop along with my friend and annual bringer of the Addams Groove: DJ John Grossyall.
